Guys once you have driven a blown engine you will not go back to normal aspirated. I will take what I have now but someday I will up the short block to 540-570 cubic inches.

what's the largest crate that won't mess up car balance? Since modern engines are aluminum, it seems that it could be pretty large.

My dream engine is ZL1 (aluminum version of the L88)
My modern day dream engine is the Merlin 632 CI with 780 horses and 765 foot pounds of torque running on pump gas.

a 396ci-540ci pretty much weighs the same. You are only looking at around 200lbs in wt difference between SB vs BB, depending on head and block materials.

Don't think the turbo will help you much.....not against cubes....ummmm...why would a small block need forced induction just to keep up with a big block?

What's your favorite dream engine for a C3?
I was going to post this, and ask what it would take to get it:
a streetable small block with 500lb-ft of torque (in a '73  ).
I figure the horsepower will come, if I aimed for what gets ya goin'. Anything over 300hp is fine (well, in the beginning... :) ). So, what would it take?

[PS: I voted for a late model LS1/6, b/c pretty new engines look sweet in the engine bay.]

I want my car to handle so a big block is a no for me. A great comparison would be montys turbocharged small block against steven kamis blown big block, now.. wich of those 2 was a huge disaster? The same one that claimed he was building a car that could outhandle a mclaren F1... yeah right, with only some vette brakes suspension upgrades and near stock calipers.

Twin Turbo that is a whole different can of worms. Monty knew what he was doing and Steve just paid someone to put something together. I predicted and even posted carefully about some of his problems that I saw comming in the future.
My bigblock certain is not a disaster, runs on the lowest of fuels if I have to, never never loads plugs or overheats and gets 15 mpg, can cruise effortlessly at 100 plus.
Funny that both Monty and Steve quickly sold the cars after completing them????
Some say there is no substitute for cubic inches, Not true, Forced induction equals cubic inches. A blower puts out tons of torque, allows for mild cams, good idle and vacuum, good mileage and a smooth flow of power. MY wife loves her bonneville and it puts out 7 pounds of boost anytime, any rpm and so soom you just feel the push of the torque.
My big block puts out 12 pounds but beside the push of torque the lose of traction tells you everything is working as it should.
I will not build any hot rod again with including some form of boost.

Dream engine? Aluminum Trans-Am Big Block, Webers or FI. Never could keep it running or find gas- so:
Gimmee a 572 GM crate, or a 540 aluminum head Merlin instead-
-any more than 600-700hp cannot be effectively used in a street C-2 or C-3, anyway.
You'll just go in circles with any more than that- but it might be fun!

I'm not in favor of the heavy big block either, also who needs all those masses of TQ when you can't even get the tires to hook up (talking street here, sportscars are made to run on the street or a course, not a straight line)
I want my car to handle so a big block is a no for me.
I want my car to handle so a big block is a no for me.
I put my 68 on the track in NCCC events, ran only street tires (Goodyear Polyglass F-60's) Only once in three years did a small block beat my time. I will concede that maybe, just maybe the small block may have an advantage on an very very tight track, one that you barely get out of first gear...such was a track the very first time I ever competed, a small go cart course, I barely got out of first gear, and prompty had to shift back to first....yea, I got beat, bad, but then again, I didn't know my butt from a hole in the ground about reading the corner's apex.
In conclusion, don't slam the big block as a big piece of boat anchor...I had the suspension dialed in, I knew what I was doing, I knew the 68's limits, I knew how hard I could push into the corner before I had to break, I knew how to drift out of the corner....trust me, the big block is more than agile on a road coarse...a small block is no match. You are right if you say, a small block with forced induction will give a good fight on a track, I will say this...you're putting more weight on the front...making it heavier, AND...hehehehe.....why do you need a turbo to keep up with the big block? :D  :D
