Re: New Dodge Hemi (turtlevette)
Chrysler must be on to something cause from the looks of this thread a lot of vette enthusiasts are falling all over themselves about it.

I guess I better stay out of this. :D
While I was young we had more than our share of MOPARS, and my dad bought his '68 HEMI GTX when he came back from Nam. It was running high 10's low 11's with some tweaking and some slicks. He campaigned that car for years
Here was our '68 Charger R/t 440-6pac w/ 4 speed and pistol grip.
For those who doubt the power and potential of the 426 HEMI, I feel sorry for you.
You are either uninformed, or too brand loyal to know the difference.

If the thing is too damn big to fit between the fenders of a C3 i'm just not interested.

Re: New Dodge Hemi (turtlevette)
I love my Hemi truck,,,average 13 miles city/hiway,,3.73 gears,,5 speed auto,,I tow my boat like it wasn't even back there,,,this motor has a very easy 500 Hp potential when the correct aftermarket parts/hypertech comes out,,and oh yeah,,,loaded (except leather) out the door for under $25,000,,,try doing that with the Ford or Chevy,,,I know, I tried,,NOTHING compared with the HP/torque of the Dodge.,,at that price!!!

The 426 HEMI clearly has some ground on the base iron 427 but it's no match for an L-88 Aluminum 427 !
....just ask Chuck Harmon !

Since I own Both of Them
I figured that this had run it`s course. But since I use them both in varoius applications I can answer this very easy. The L88 is not a run of the mill production engine and is way over a factory street 427 in HP.. It`s a pure race engine and so is the ZL1. The factory stock inline dual carb 426 street Hemi is really no match for the L88`s or ZL1`s. However The A990 Race Hemi will out perform either of those chevys but by only a narrow margin. These sites will help in that analisys as I race both of the engines. Chevys and Hemis. Push on the A990 race hemi button on the first site. http://www.thehemi.com/notable.php?=003 and http://www.nitroalley.net  The 426 HEMI clearly has some ground on the base iron 427 but it's no match for an L-88 Aluminum 427 !

Heres the other site, http://www.nitroalley.net You can also actually hear the A990 run if you seek out the A990 Cuda Page by pushing the "start engine" button

Maybe they don't want to "play" but I can beat a Hemi truck in my somewhat modified crossfire. Love to say, "is that a hemi" and then leave them. Believe it or don't

i'd like to see some drag racing to prove if hemis are so great. I used to belong to the GS club of America when i had my Grand National and they used to smoke Mopars all the time.

Re: New Dodge Hemi (paul67)
The old original 426 hemi was a beast, but I have to agree with the guys that in street trim as it was put in Chargers, Cudas and Road Runners, wasn't the best performer right out of the box.
Back in 1969 I had a Dodge Dart 340-4speed and I guy I knew had a 69 Dodge hemi Charger. If he spent the morning tuning the car, then he would pull me about 4 or 5 car lengths in the 1/4 mile. But, a week or so later, I had no problem staying with him and sometimes pull him him by a couple of car lengths. Remember this was a stock, out of the show room car, with the factory cam, and no headers installed.
Part of it was (he was a miserable driver) but part of it was the real weakness was the hemi's sensitivity to tuning.

Re: New Dodge Hemi (paul67)
The whole thing is just really good marketing. We have a handful in our fleet and they do real well, but nothing over the top. I want that new AWD Magnum wagon to replace my trusty Subaru. Now that would get me through the snow!
Another engine that rocked when built up was the BOSS 429. I went to a couple IHRA shows in the early '90's when they had the 'mountain motor' class, and the guys without a BOSS had to work way harder.

I'll take the Chevy. What do these overrated engines cost anyway. With the same amount of money that you would spend on the BOSS or A990 i could build a Chevy stroker that would walk you.
P.S. check out this other thread

looks like the hemi cuda is number 4 behind the 427 Vette
but what do i know?

Ironcross - I saw your Hemi Cuda a few years ago in Hot Rod and thought it was one of the nicest car's I've ever seen. Could you please post more pics of it?
