Does your Vette have Matching Numbers?
Hi Guys, Great Forum, this is my first post, so be patient please.
I did a search, but had no luck finding my answer.
How many of you on this site have a "numbers matching" Vette?
The Vette I'm interested in, does not have the original motor.

Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
How bout this. Mine was a numbers matching 350/300. That is no longer true as I have rebuilt the motor the way I wanted it. I also took the 4 speed out and put in a 5 Speed OD tranny. Mine came from the factory with green paint, when I got it, it was painted white. I just sent it out to get painted black.
However, I do still have all of the numbers matching parts in my garage if I ever want to go back.

Depends on how you define numbers matching. By a used car seller's definition, yes, I have a completely numbers matching car, because everything in my drivetrain is original. By NCRS standards, I'm not even close to numbers matching, though I'm getting there. Real "numbers matching" means everything with a number--alternator, fan clutch, fan, carb, water pump, etc, etc, etc.

Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
Hi Red...welcome to the forum. The matching numbers thing is only important if you WANT it to be important. If you are buying the Vette as a "collector", then the matching numbers thing matters. Personally, I wouldn't WANT a matching numbers mid 70's Vette, because my 6-cylinder Monte Carlo has more horsepower than some of them and can probably blow them off
My '72 Vette has a matching numbers 454 engine and I am yanking it out to be replaced by a non-Chevy performance crate engine. I also yanked out most of the creature comfort stuff to save weight (air conditioner/heater/radio/etc). I'm only using my Vette on the strip, so horsepower numbers are more important to me than serial numbers :)
Whatever you do, buy the Vette because YOU want it, not because of worry about matching numbers or some other guy's advice.

To be specific, my engine is original and numbers matching (i.e. not a re-stamp). There are some good explanations above, so get ready to learn from some great people and info on this forum.

You only live once-I'm building the car the way I want it-no the way they all came from the factory. "Numbers matching" is very unimportant to most people that are performance enthusiasts as apposed to purists.

you got that right. What kind of engine are you puttin in and why not Chevy?

Just not a Chevy block. Will be either Merlin III or Dart block.
Technically not a "Chevy" motor. Still the Chevy design though.

Re: Does your Vette have Matching Numbers? (Red Sting 70)
I have all the original stuff for my '77. It is in the garage. I often wonder why I am keeping all those parts. In reality, the '70's nostalgia thing has come and gone and still no spike in prices for mid 70's vettes, original or otherwise. They will probably never be collectors items. But, I can make the '77 a numbers matching car if necessary. (I must be an idiot to keep all those parts. They are a waste of space.)

Aw, don't tell me. George again.
I think you just might be right, MJ. Nobody in the world pissed more about matching numbers than George did about his rusty '73.

Nope. NOM motor spun a rod bearing, so I'm putting in an LS1 and T56. First test fitting is this afternoon!!!
