Can you splice together the oil pressure line?
Thinking of somehow to avoid pulling the dash to connect the old pressure gauge to the new BB engine.
Is there a way to connect the gauge to the pump without pulling the dash. A connector of some sort?
Thanks
Len

if it's the thin plastic line your refering to you can buy small compression fittings to splice the line together..you can pick them up at most auto parts stores.. sometimes the leak though.. hence not being legal for brakes.. you can get all sorts of sizes..

The original line is 1/8 OD I believe. The tough part will be trying to get the right fittings. The kit is avaible to replace from manifold to guage, but nore sure if a double compression fitting available in that size.

Yeah, it's the tiny plastic line. I think it is 1/8. Never thought about the compression fittings.

I dunno--would make a hell of a mess if it failed, and you'd be pumping your lubrication out on the ground or your carpet and maybe not know it until it was too late.

Be aware that the original line will be brittle in high heat areas. Plan on changing it all eventually and put your splice fitting in an easy to reach spot. Having had the original line fail behind the dash (out of town, of course!), You can guess what I'd do. It justified my carrying tools, though. Couldn't save the carpet and padding, however.

I plan on changing the entire line eventually. I don't want to hold up the engine break-in and drivability while I pull the dash to change the tubing. I know how that'd go too. One of those while I'm at it projects would start.

Buy one of those cheepe op gadges at the parts store and just hook it up remotely. Make sure you get the kit that has the copper line so you can use it when you pull the gadge consele. Don't use the plastic line to do the final repair they have a habit of :U .

IMHO splicing is not worth the risk. A few hours work and small money for new is not as expensive or time consuming as new carpet & engine bay clean up. Replace the whole line.

It has been a few years since I replaced my 70's oil pressure line when I put in my ZZ crate engine. I am sure I just removed the map pocket portion of the dash and disconnected the old line and then ran the new GM original type of line and connected the new one.

70ZZ3's got it right. No need to pull the console, etc. Take off the map pocket and the radio passenger side "console" plate. You can reach the oil gauge that way. It's not real hard to "fish" a new nylon line through from the engine compartment through the firewall to the gauge.
Don't use copper...they fatigue and break. Original "metal" lines used on other year Corvettes' were copper clad/plated steel...not copper. Chuck

:withstupid: Len, looking out the window, you've got time to do this one right. Congrats on your progress. Let me know when I can come up to see it.

Looking Outside??? Here's looking outside. :cry I'm tired of shoveling snow!
Jay, I thought you were coming up to help me? :D J/k I'm not pulling any engines just yet. Just trying to tie up some loose ends while I'm unable to actually perform any work.
70ZZ# & Chuck: thanks, I didn't realize that it'd be that easy to go thru the map pocket. I didn't want to start pulling the dash. The map pocket I think I can hadle. :D If it's that easy, I may spring for the SS braided line.

Where to get the stainless braided line. If that is the best way to go, then that is what I want. I certainly don't want oil to ruin my new radio, carpet and pad.

Eddie, you can get it from Jeg's. The picture isn't correct though.

I guess 4 ft should be enough.

3 feet should be way plenty. I am all over this one. Thanks for the link Len. $30 bucks is a small price when you consider replacement costs of the interior pieces that could wind up wasted.
