My EBay Distributor Arrived
Going back to the Pertronix thread of a couple of weeks ago I mentioned my intention to re-build a tach drive distributor with a Lars kit and NAPA/Echlin points and condensor. (I have a Pertronix Ignitor I on the car at the moment.) I picked up a host distributor body on EBay and it arrived today. The tag is 1111493 or 1969 350cid/350hp. I chose that unit as the weights will be consistent with the vacuum advance (B28) and springs provided in the Lars kit. He recommended the use of the hipo parts.
It is a little bit dirty but the shaft spins freely and the tach drive is operable. So the basics seem sound. Another project to keep me occupied this winter ;).

Paul,
There was a Yahoo commercial a while back with Eskimos sitting in an Igloo with a hot tub, a BBQ outside etc. Given the temps up by you, I can picture you cooped up indoors buried in snow and 40 below temps surrounded by vette projects and old parts with venturing out only to greet the postal service. Then returning indoors with an evil mad scientist grin ready to tackle the next project. :lolg:

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (Robert N)
Robert,
Twin Turbo took me to task for having too many intakes in the basement ;). I'm down to two actually. Plus the one on the car in storage. So now I'm starting on distributors! I won't mention all new gages....
But seriously I enjoy tinkering. It's a hobby. I run a consulting business and I bill about 10-12 days per month. The rest of the time is mine. This week I was working on a professional services contract and the windchill downtown was -43F. I'd rather be in the basement fooling about with Corvette parts than take that on a regular basis. So I do the basement thing when I feel inclined.

Wish I was in your shoes. I love to tinker too. Unfortunately, with my business and 2 young sons, I have to schedule bathroom breaks.

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (paul67)
I'm off to a good start but need a bit of help:
-those two upper grooves in the main shaft. Are they asking for rubber o-rings?
-the tiny nylon bushings for the weights studs. Where can I get them?
-the points/condensor base plate. How does it come off?
-what is the purpose of the black wire from the base plate to the vacuum canister mount screw?
-when I put this back together can I use chassis lube?
Look forward to your replies.

paul,
In order, NO(grease),I don`t have any that have "bushings" on the studs (and I have 25 tach drive distributors),Look carefully at the top and you will find a clip, Ground, NO use engine assembly lube or GM "shaft grease". and while your at it I would think about changing the lower bushing, about 100% of the distributors I rebuild need a lower bushing. ...redvetracr
PS: under the points plate you will/should find the "felt" and the top seal (the seal is still avail. from GM but not much else is..........

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (redvetracr)
So the top grooves are just greased. There was a nylon bushing when I took it apart from the weight plate to the vacuum canister junction. But it just fell off in pieces. I will try NAPA for a replacement. So the wire is a ground. OK. I will get some engine assembly lube. Lower bushing is OK: no play. I am looking for a base plate circlip but can't find one. What type of clip is it? If I get that off I will go with a top seal from GM.
*Edit*-I found the clip. It is a flimsy little affair. Do you recommend that I use a real circlip on that shaft?

So here I am at the end of the day. Everything is cleaned up and ready to put back together when I get the proper lube. Fun day. I enjoyed it. And thanks for the help!

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (paul67)
Paul,
On the bottom of the mainshaft there is a small bushing (plastic) that goes through the cam, I use a piece of teflon tubing. ...redvetracr
PS: I don`t think a real circlip will fit under the "cam" it needs to rotate, reuse the flimsy clip..
PSll: If you look real close where the bushing was you will see a groove for a tiny e-clip

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (redvetracr)
I have very much appreciated your help today. The EBay distrib came with a rotor and cap. So this small project can be completed tomorrow when the paint dries. I will re-use the flimsie clip. I guess it will do the job. As an aside the cam gear looks just fine: little wear. And I will remember to line up the dimple with rotor number one. Love this Forum. So many good tips!
PS-I will be shimming to 0.007". Does that seem OK?
*Edit*-I need that nylon shim/bushing that connects to the vacuum advance. Where can I get one?

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (79Fever)
I don't use paint or solvents very often in the winter. It does indeed stink up the house. And I cannot afford to open the doors and windows at -15F. Solvents such as lacquer thinner can be downright dangerous. But I do not undertake large cleaning or paint projects anymore. A little spray can paint from time-to-time.

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (paul67)
It's finished. I set the shaft play to 0.007". The advance stud bushing was actually part of the Lars kit as a brass version. I picked up and installed the e-clip to secure it as recommended by redvetracr. Thanks for that! I lack the rotor cap screws but that is not a major issue. It looks fine; I hope it works!
Now back to my original radio rebuild and stereo project....
*Edit*-And the dimple on the drive gear is pointed in the same direction as the rotor tip;) .

Re: My EBay Distributor Arrived (gmcclurg)
Thanks! I bought an AC Delco rotor with screws today, put on the cap and the unit is now stored away for the spring. So I now have an option to Pertronix. Whether that is a reasonable option to Pertronix Ignitor II I do not know at this point. We shall see.
