Tonight will be -31C (-24F). Overnight windchill will be -42C (-43F). That is almost where a 70:30 antifreeze/water mixture starts to gel. Ladies and Gentlemen, it's bloody cold! The Corvette is snugged away in 60F commercial storage for the winter but the block heater on my 2001 Impala is plugged in tonight. Nevertheless tomorrow morning might be a real treat in getting that car going....Fortunately I run a home business and can commute electronically. If anyone ever thought 0W-30 did not make sense!!!

Thanks Jeff. I worked inside/outside in this weather last winter at a GM dealership. One of my post-retirement ventures. I really don't know how I did it. Left that job last May. So now I am retired for the third time. And of course doing the consulting thing. But that keeps me active.

In my formative days in the 1950s I lived in Whitehorse in the Yukon. It was fun then but damn it's a pain now. Had the basement oil tank replaced yesterday because of new environmental laws re insurance and oil spill liabilities (tanks over 25 years). Mine did service for 42 years. Basically insurance does not cover leaks and the government can condemn your house in the event of a leak in the soil below the basement concrete pad. Those with homes with older tanks should check with the insurance company. I twigged to this about a year ago. The laws are brutal. At least in this Province. But that job is now done so the new tank will outlast me. And the furnace is humming just fine this evening. Bit like a Corvette: it needs a tune-up and that was done last week.

Ed, I love that pic! See my comments re the fuel oil tank replacement. I posted in O/T some time ago and you were kind enough to reply. Well I had the replacement tank put in yesterday. And I now have peace-of-mind. It was the insurance thing that drove it. I noted your comments that many tanks are still good after 40 years but I really do not need a $25,000 fight with my insurance company in case of spillage. They will win.

The stud wall did not have to come out: these guys were good and twisted and turned the tank everyway which way but bad and got it in without damage. They cut the old with a Dremel and it went out in pieces. I love to watch - not supervise - competent workers. So another project accomplished.....albeit it non-Corvette.

Dep is going to get me for this post ;) .

My daughter came home and told me that the school made an announcement about school closure due to cold tomorrow - hope it extends to the high school the students are burned out with the rediculous workload being dumped on them just before the end of the semester.

Well the past few winters have been pretty mild, I have seen quite a few -20 degree days myself :U

The best part about those cold stretches is that when it warms up it actaully feels warm! LOL In fact I remember after one cold stretch having the car window rolled down it was so warm, then I passed a back thermometer...it was 10 degrees outside :eek:

This is a nasty one. I suspect the school buses will be out because of paraffin precipitation in the diesel fuel. The City will be picking up panhandlers tonight for their safety. The next problem will be frozen water pipes as the frost goes down below the old standard 5' inlet depth. I suspect there will be reports of this in the morning newspaper. Logging off for tonight....

I woke up this morning to -38C before the windchill!!! Was really glad my GP has 2 block heaters, battery warmer and a remote starter!

But that's life in Yellowknife NWT!

What's the main source of heating homes in Canada? Electric, natural gas, fuel oil, etc? I'd think that since Canada has an excess of natural gas that it sends to the U.S. that would be the main one. Right or wrong?

Not to start any north/south wars.... it's in the 40's here just south of Houston tonight. And sunny and warmer tomorrow.

Working in Moscow so I know where you are coming from. I am not looking forward to going to Siberia in a week or so, they are recording temps as low as -40c before windchill! Role on the summer! Even if its only a Scottish one!! :lol:
