I Have Sickening News, My Newly Restored 68 was stollen Last Sunday
I never thought this would happen to me I took such great care to insure that I parked the Vette in a well-lit area and always in a busy area and of course always garaged when at home. Last Sunday I took a friend to the Warf area of San Francisco after a few hours of site seeing the Alcatraz Park. That was enough time for the thieves to do their dirty little deed. The horror is just starting I called my insurance agent and he informed me that I may not be insured because the vette was left un-attended. I have over $55,000 invested in my little jewel. The horror of it all. What are the chances of the police recovering the vette? I also can't believe that I will be making payments on something I don't have.

Sorry to here of this, maybe it would help if you posted a description of your Vette so the other forum members can be on the look out for it in your area.
I remember one time where someone spotted someone else's stolen Vette and it was able to be recovered with little damage.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

That's ridiculous if your ins. doesn't cover it. Did you tell them that it probably wouldn't have been stolen if you were near car.

The insurance company said it was left unattended.....
So what? What did they expect you to do? Keep it in sight everytime you drive it?
Gimme a break! Sue them!!! ....and post pics, hopefully someone will spot it!

That really stinks. My insurance policy definitly says that it cannot be left unattended in a parking lot. I have collecter insurance on it. Keep on trying with the insurance company. Go back and read over the policy and see if it states anywhere about leaving it unattended. If it does you might be out of luck.

I personally refuse to believe that an insurance company can refuse to pay up because you had simply parked your car. First thing I would do is to scream "law suit" as loud as I could in the face of the insurance agent if he continues to take that position. I'm sure for part of a $55K settlement, you'll have lawyers lined up a mile long. Hang in there and give'em he11. :mad

It's not easy to hide a restored 68 vette, give us some pics and a description so we can be on the lookout. I bet it will surface sooner or later.

Guys, this is a VERY common restriction in almost every collector car insurance policy. The car cannot be left unattended, must be parked in a locked garage at home, can't be used for daily trransportation, etc. That's why the rates for collector car policies are so incredibly low. All the ranting about the evil insurance company is misplaced.

That's horrible news. My Vette isn't worth anywhere near $55,000 but I don't let it outa my sight for more than 5 min....and that's at a car cruise.

Re: I Have Sickening News, My Newly Restored 68 was stollen Last Sunday (Pro-Restored 68 Vert)
Thank-you for the kind words on my insurance agents and my lawyers advice I am told not to mention the insurance companies name at this point. I did insure the vette for an agreed value of $40,000 I tried to keep my rates low vs. me insuring the vette for the true cost of $55,000. It looks Like I am going to loose big-time no matter what happens. The real killer is I still have to make payments on the $30,000 I owe on the vette. As far as description it was a stock 68 vert, red with a black top just like any other 68 but in mint shape. The cop on the case said chances of them re-covering the vette will depend on 2 things If it was taken for a joy ride by kids there may be a good chance. But if it was taken by Pros. almost no chance.

Well, believe it because it is real in a collector policy.
In my policy it is not in the fine print. It is BOLD print, and it is in there many, many times.
Chances of police finding it is slim to none. Here in my town the Police want even look for a stolen vehicle. They say they don't have time.

So, insurance would pay for a stollen car only if it was ripped off while your sitting in the car or leaning up against it? I guess I had better start carrying a porta pottie with me when I go for a drive.
