Looking for Dart "Little M " Block
I am looking for a Dart block with 400 mains. Summit has them for 1700.00. It seems they always offer their 10% deal right after I make a major purchase. As a service to the forum, I will let you know when I make a large purchase so you can keep an eye out for the 10% off deal that is sure to follow. :mad

Just a question? Why would you want the big 400 mains? I have the 350 mains and the trend these days is smaller is better.

What is the edvantage of using the 350 mains? Wouldn't the 400 mains be stronger? Using the 350 mains could I use the damper and flywheel off my 350 engine? I am planning on building a 427.

KJL, I wouldn't buy something big like an aftermarket block from Summit. They have great service, but you pay a premium for it. I bought my block through Scoggin Dickey, saved over a hundred bucks on the price, and got them to throw in free shipping. Summit wanted $200 to ship the block. I think scoggin is even running a free shipping deal this month.

KJL - Can anybody tell me the answer to this question.
What is the weakest link in a small block chevy? Keep it easy just the short block with rotating assembly. It's for sure not the diameter of the crank main saddle journal size if you install a forged 4340 crank shaft.
The Small Block Chevy connecting rod crank end is the same diameter for 400 or 350 mains.

You can get the required stroke for your 427sbc with a forged 350 main crank (I've seen them in the Doug Herbert catalog ;) ).
A couple of benefits that I've heard is:
1. Smaller journals = smaller contact area = less friction/ drag
2. Small Rod journals = smaller large end on rods = lighter rotating assembly
If the above is indeed true, then you should be able to make a tad bit more power & rev a bit quicker :)
I bought my Dart Little M with 350 mains to fit the 3.625 stroke crank with my small journal rods.
I got a great deal on my block from Speed-O-Motive which was at the end of the year last Dec. 24

I have the Motown standard deck 427 ci small block with 350 mains. They are incredibly strong when compared to a wimpy stock block. :)
I do not have experience with the Dart block. Monty used the tall Dart block for his motor build. IMO it would be worth researching using the taller block because of the higher cam location.
To clear a 1.050 base circle Comp Cams H-roller cam we had to grind every rod and rod bolt on large 6 inch H beam 4340 steel rod. The smartest thing to do is probably buy a 4 inch stroke master racing rotating assembly pre clearanced and internally balanced

i AM PLANNING ON USING A SMALL BASE CIRCLE FLAT HYDROLIC CAM. I HOPE THAT WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM. THE BLOCK IS SUPPOSED TO BE ALREADY CLEARANCED. i AM PLANNING ON PURCHASING THE STROKED BALANCED ROTATING KIT FROM BILL MITCHELL HARDCORE PARTS. I WILL HAVE TO ASK THEM ABOUT THE CLEARANCE ISSUE.

My kit is also from BM. I would also advise against using the -20 cc dished pistons. Do some research on how your going to attain the correct compression ratio.
One of the forum members used 76 cc heads without thinking and ended up with 8.5 compression.

Re: Looking for Dart "Little M " Block (gkull)
wITH MY 64 CC HEADS 20CC DISHED WILL PUT ME AT 10:1CR. (4.125 bore & 4" stroke) I am planning on doing some port work to my Edelbrock RPM heads to open them up some for the larger displacement engine. That may enlarge the comb chamber, so I may want to go with 18cc dished to give me a little margin.

You may want to call someone like these guys:
www.ohiocrank.com
Their price is a little higher than Summit or SDPC, but it also includes decking, final bore hone, and installed cam bearings. All things that I assume the other prices do not.

Re: Looking for Dart "Little M " Block (72 Stingray)
72 Stingray - Ohio crank seems to have some good prices! Probably though when you start adding options they get right back in line with places like FlatLander etc...........
Fever, I’ve got @ 10.38 compression with my 64cc & .021 copper head gasket. I was looking at 76cc for future blower motor operation. It would get me down to @ 8.4

Re: Looking for Dart "Little M " Block (gkull)
GKull,
I haven't purchased from them (yet), but I think OC's prices are competitive on rotating assemblies and such because they grind their own cranks in-house using the same cores as Scat, Eagle, etc.. I have read some good reviews of their stuff on other websites.

Re: Looking for Dart "Little M " Block (74droptop)
From what I have read a 427 should be able to produce in the area of 500 hp and 500 ft-lbs of torque on pump gas. Ohio Crank is selling a 434 which is a .030 over 427 short block for 3695.00 which is the best deal I have seen yet. This includes a 4340 crank, Motown block, JE pistons, 6" rods etc. Nice deal. That is a hard deal to beat. AFR remcomended the their 195's for the rpm range I am interested in.

Damn that 434 looks tempting! Don't think I can build it for that. Let me see ..... a supercharged EFI 434. :yesnod: Do I smell a GP on 434's? :D
