How do I tear this ^%#$*^%$*&% thing out????
Hi All,
I'm a rippin' and a tearin' on my '72. I need some help though.
I have this useless vacuum box under the fender on the driver's side.
I stood on my head and STILL can't see WTF is holding it on. No bolts visible at all from above. Looked underneath and can't see much either. One possibility comes to mind. The eggcrate vent on the side of the car. If I remove that MAYBE I'll be able to see what's attaching it. Is that how everyone else gets at this friggin thing??? :mad

It's the vacuum tank for headlights and wiper door. It has a bracket welded to it that bolts to the inner fender. The bolts are accessible through the wheel-well (remove the drivers front wheel for ease of access).

I hear ya. I had to go through the same thing when we replaced the front cap on my car.

The box is not useless, but is prone to failure, typically cracking which results in a loss of vacuum, sluggest headlights, etc. These can be hard to find. If yours is bad, I have a couple on the shelf.

What this vacuum reservoir does is allow you to actuate the headlights without having to run the engine. It stores vacuum.........if your system is tight. My system is OK, I can actuate my lights once after shutting down the engine but the vacuum only lasts about 10 minutes before it bleeds up. I was going to take it out (Its not necessary unless you want the function mentioned above) and put my MSD box there but I realized how hard:banghead: it is to get out I put my box on the other side.

I tried to get mine out to do repairs on it. I had the whole thing loose in that little area where it sits but couldn't get it out because of the master cylinder.

The box is useless to me because I no longer have the wiper door and headlight stuff hooked up. I need it out to get at the wiring connection from the engine to the firewall. I still wonder if it would fit through the egg crate vent? Is the box made out of plastic? I can smash it to a pulp if it is.

Metal. Probably do more damage to the surrounding 'glass than the tank if you force it. Take off the master cylinder to remove it. Again, an original tank (with the little stamped numbers) is worth $$$, so I'd E-bay it...

I'm still gonna try the egg crate vent. I may have "discovered" a new trick to repairing/replaceing that stoopid thing :D

Don't bust it, whatever you do....that vacuum tank is worth biiiiig bucks
Think it's way too big to take out the egg crate hole.
Master Cyl removal is the only way I know how to get it out. Can't remember if I had to pull the steering column, or if the column was out.

Okedoke. I just put a new master in and haven't done the bleed job on it yet so it's no biggie. Cripes...if I have to pull the steering column I'll get a hacksaw and cut it (the vacuum box) out in pieces!!!!! No way I want to yank out the steering column. At least, not YET. Eventually I plan on installing a T&T column, but that's way down the road.

The egg crate thing looks like it has 2 phillips screws holding it on from the top.

Along with the two screws at the top, the egg crate is also held on be a nut and stud on the bottom. If you look up behind the rocker panel with a flashlight you'll see it.

Pulling the egg crate will give you perfect access to the forward lamp harness and engine harness as it comes out of the firewall. Be carefull of the lower portion of the crate. Crate must be lifted straight up to clear the lower stud after all fasteners are removed. That bottom fiberglass flange of the body can crack easily. Don't force it...
