Default Need a Tall Cowl Induction Hood

My only winter project this year of any consequence is to change the intake system on my 78 pace car. I need a cowl induction hood that has 5" of clearance measured from the surface of the drain rail in line with the center of the carb. A company called carhoods.com sells a #TCVH-68 which has 4.5" but I don't know how they measured it. Also there doesn't appear to be a plate available to seal off a freah air chamber for it and I don't know about the quality of their products. Eckler's sells a #10420 which has 4 5/8" of clearance but I need just a little more.

I made my own desing, some 2" taller than stock. It's pretty easy thing to do your own hood.

:iagree: with Pat and Jay on doing your own. I don't know if mine will turn out as good as theirs but I'll be starting mine by the end of the week. I'll be modifying a long L-88 hood. I need more clearance up front due to the throttlebody height and air cleaner arrangement on my Accel ProRam fuel injection. You're more than welcome to come help and get some practice on mine. I'm just "itchin" to get started. :lolg: :lolg:

My hood is also a homemade unit from a stock hood :D

Maybe you can get away with something slightly less than 5" by using a drop base and slaightly shorter air filter ;) .

I really don't want to use a drop down carb. base because I want everyone to see all the chrome on the carb and engine. I also want my air cleaner base to clear the top of my distributor so that I can get more air into the car from the cowl induction.

One of the websites you all have given me has some really tall cowl induction scoops and I will use one of them if I can't find a complete hood with a tall enough scoop. I do not want to modify my stcok hood because I want a hood with a lot nicer finish on the underside of the hood than the stock one has. I really want to start with a fresh, new hood with at least a 5" tall cowl induction scoop.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far.

Why not just get a drag-race model hood, complete with a snorkel-type scoop?
If you're looking for 'attention' (you mentioned people 'seeing-the-chrome'), a Pro-Stock style scoop will DEFINITELY deliver!!!!!
