Default 1974 Tire Purchase Experience Today.....

After getting the rear bumper done, went to a local reputable tire shop and ordered five P225/70R-15 BFG Radial T/As. There seemed to be some confusion about getting my car "in" to do the tires. I asked what the problem was and the mgr said "Billy Bob" has never pulled in a Corvette onto the rack. I said "Well, he sure as hell ain't gonna learn on my car" :cuss . Then after I get the car onto the rack the other "helper" opened the passenger door and tilted the seat forward. I said "What are you doing?". He said " You're getting five tires are'nt you? I'm looking for the spare" I said "You sure as hell ain't gonna find it back there  It's under the car(dumb ***)". Then "Billy Bob"(he looked about 18yrs old)asked "Does it have a 283?" I said, "No, it's got a 327"

You can't pay for this kind of entertainment :lolg:

Paul,

I like the P225/70's on my '71, but when I had new tires put on the '74(that is gone now) Discount Tire recommended P255/60's. They looked really good on it. This reputable shop is not a chain of *idiots* across the country is it?

You should have asked the kid to check your battery for you, then watch him look for it....

you know, when i went in for tires they almost broke the hood on my 69. they couldnt figure out that the hood goes up, and then down. Luckly i was watching them and ran over there, or else i would have had some real fun replacing the hood

You should have asked the kid to check your battery for you,
....but first show him your "spare" battery behind the seat!

Well in defense of the kid. Since he was only 18, how can we reasonably expect him to be knowledgeable of our 35 year old cars.

A little over done here in my opinion! But I am just one guy and am wrong alot. :skep:

This is the reason I take my wheels(and tires) to the tire store in the bed of my truck!

I also got 225/70 BFG TA's from a local reputable tire shop. (I got the H rated tire, blackwall only). As above, I put the vette up on stands, removed all 4 wheels and took them to the shop in my station wagon. Then I took them home and put the new wheels/tires back on. Seemed like a lot of work by the time I was done, but stories like yours make me feel better about being a little bit ****! MJ

I agree. When I was 18 back in '78, I didn't know anything about cars from the '40's. When I get the new skins, I will put them in the back of the pickup. I you want it done correct, do it yourself.

Seriously, give the kid a break. High school kid trying to earn a buck, I bet you're an expert on the specs for cars made 20years before you were born.

That being said, I don't understand why people have to act like they know things about these cars when they don't have a clue. Why not ask "What's it got in it?" or "What year is it?" instead of "You know, they only made V6s for this year" Better to appear ignorant than a dumba55!!

If you go to the local Tire Pro and expect an experienced mechanic of 30 years to stick on some tires for you, you're kidding yourself. Sad but true.
