Who Has The Most HP out of a Naturally Aspirated 350 L-48?
We're talking no blowers, NOS, turbo...etc.
I would like to rebuild this coming spring and would like to check out some proven combos.
thanks in advance, Les :D

Am submitting my combination for consideration. See signature info. I am about to replace the intake gasket due to internal engine oil entering combusion chambers so these numbers may soon increase... :smash:

If you are going to rebuild it there is a lot of things you can do to get into the 300's. The heads are the bigest problem. Set of pistons and bigger valves are needed to get any where. Then a good cam and intake can do the job.

Merlin had twin turbo's I thought (not naturally aspirated) Save your money on the L-48 engine and build a stroker motor. The L48 would need a girdle or a lot of help to get near what you could do with the stroker.

Mine has quite a bit of HP without a turbo or anything of that sort. Check out my sig for the mods...

Merlin had twin SUPER-chargers, yes. really really big ones :D And that was pretty far from a 350....

Here is few specs from a L46 based engine made in Finland.
Modified iron heads (original)
13:1 compression (with bubble top pistons)
bored to 355cid
special headers
redline in 8000rpm
522 horsepowers! And that is with IRON heads!

I plan to go this route in a year or two(when I get the money and time). Just get a good pair of heads and make sure the engine works together. My goal is to stroke it to 383 and push over 500 hp. I know it can be done fairly simple, just not sure on exact internals yet.

Mine is an L-48, at least the block still is :D .
Rebuilt by Golen's Engine Service in MA. .030 over, Edelbrock RPM heads, 10:1 compression, Comp XE262 cam with 1.6 rockers. Dynomax headers with duals and Performer 2101 manifold with a 'Lar's' tuned Q-jet.
Put about 6000 miles on this combo and it pulled hard from 2000 to 5000 rpm. Desktop Dyno 2000 said 400 ft-lbs from 2500-4500 rpm and 360 hp at 5000.
Replacing the cam with an XE274 this weekend since the car is no longer a daily drive (also needed to kill some low end torque with the Tremec 5 spd's steep 1st gear). Dyno 2000 shows 380+ ft-lbs from 3000 to 500 rpm and a 384 hp peak at 5500 rpm. This should go well with my self imposed 6000 rpm redline for the original block.
Of course, those AFR heads willl get me up over 400 hp. Maybe I can find some more change in the couch. ;)

Re: Who Has The Most HP out of a Naturally Aspirated 350 L-48? (AGVI)
I don't quite qualify, I have a non-stock bottom end at this point, but it's still technically a chevy 350:
bored .30 over (355)
forged flat top pistons
Corvette aluminum heads (ported by previous owner)
RPM performer intake
Comp cams magnum 280
usual header and dual exhuast combo
compression at 10.7
650 holley double pumper
I am out of town but engine builder did a desktop dyno on, I have the spec sheets at home. If I remember it was about 390 horsepower at 5600 RPM.

Re: Who Has The Most HP out of a Naturally Aspirated 350 L-48? (AGVI)
My L-48 throught the stock exhaust minus the cat and emission stuff did 186 hp at the rear wheel. Around 220 hp at the engine.
Now if you want to have more guts, you have two choice. Modify your current engine, it cost less for the moment but you'll be limited. The day that you decide to go over 350 hp, after 1500$ or 2000$ you'll need to start all over.
IMO the right way is to built another engine right now. For example, i bought an 1997 350 vortec 4 bolt block. I paid 500$ can and it came with the vortec heads, really strong rod (they claim good for 500hp) and a roller cam. Even at 1000$ can it would be worth it. The engine had 125k miles on it and it was in great condition. The problem was a worn out bearing rod. At around 3000$ US shipping, taxes and machining included, you could have a 400 hp like new engine.
Isn't it fun to spend others $$$. :)
I ran close to 13.50 through stock manifold and muffler. Can't wait to put headers and true dual.
