ZZ383 Info
I e-mailed Jim Pace to see what they knew about the ZZ383:
Me:
Are there any details on the ZZ383 crate motor? Price, specs, availability? What happened to Spring '03? It's October!!
Thanks,
Matt

Hi,
Sorry but GM has not released this engine yet. The last thing I heard was the company making the rods for the 383 went out of business so GM is trying to find another manufacture. Sorry about the delay.
Thank you,

 thanks Matt for keeping us updated. i've been really anxious to see this motor come out....i hope its real soon! i definitely need a motor toward the end of the year, beginning of next year. all this delay is just drawing my attention toward a big block. :D i think in the long run, i would much rather have the benefits of a small block though.

Re: ZZ383 Info (Scooter70)
They had a pre-production order form on the GM Performance Parts website for a while but it is no longer there. Since I believe the same short block is used for the HT383 but with fast burn heads, I wonder if there is any back order on the HT383?

I've been pricing GM crate engines out of the GM performance parts catalog. I originally had my eye on the ZZ383, and I had not realized they are not yet available. Now the 454ci is also looking good to me. Everyone talks the big blocks up as the best. What are the benefits of a small block over a big block? I'm not ready nor do I need to buy immediately, so I could wait for the ZZ383. I guess I'd like the fundamental pro & cons of both big & small blocks.

2. SB parts are cheap and abundant
3. Switching from a sb to bb can add up with all the little things need.
I think with all the parts avail for sb these days including stroker kits and after market blocks that can get you up 454 ci , it comes down to a matter of preference.

:iagree: its all preference...i like big block cars...had a big block chevelle. of course there are benefits with big blocks over small blocks..but i just prefer small block with its benefits.

Re: ZZ383 Info (Ryan77)
Seems GM has pulled all the data for it but if I remember right it is a HT 383 short block with fast burn heads and a LT4 hot cam making about 430 hp and 500 lbs-ft of torq with about 9.6/1 comp.

The all new ZZ383 offers Big Block performance with a Small Block price tag. GMPP starts with the legendary Fast Burn cylinder heads and 383cid, to offer an incredible 460 ft. lbs. of torque @ 4500 rpm with a smooth, linier delivery. The combination of a 3.800” steel crank and a stout .509/.528 lift hydraulic roller camshaft produces 425hp @ 5400 rpm, making the ZZ383 the benchmark by which all other 383cid small blocks will be measured. GM’s testing was completed using a GM single-plane intake manifold, a 750cfm Demon mechanical secondary carb, and 1-3/4” primary x 33” length headers with a 4” collector. A dual-plane intake manifold can be used, but will affect overall peak performance numbers by 15-20 HP.
TECH SPECS:
*Horsepower: 425 @ 5400
*Torque: 460 @ 4500
*Max. Recommended RPM: 6000
*Compression Ratio: 9.7:1
*Crankshaft: Forged Steel
*Connecting Rods: 10108688 PM Rods.
*Camshaft 12370846 (hydraulic roller):
-Gross Lift (.509” I / .528” E.)
-Duration @ .050 (222 I / 230 E).
*Cylinder Heads: 12464298 aluminum 62cc. combustion chambers.
*Rockers: 1.5:1 Roller Rocker
*Four bolt main block
*Powdered Metal Connecting Rods
*8” Balancer
*GM aluminum single-plane intake manifold
Pretty wimpy cam.... would make more power with more cam!

ZZ383
I had not heard of the ZZ383 either, but it is funny as I currently am running a Fast Burn 385, and have already begun to think about stroking it, and running a more agressive solid roller cam.
Has anyone out there have any experience stroking the Fast Burn?
Thanks, Eric.
