A brand new numbers matching GM Quad is over 600 bucks from the Chev dealer. Your carb is a good deal comparitively...for someone who wants a quardajet.

ok, if you are serious, I will bite: You have a "survivor" low mileage original 72 bigblock and you are selling the original carb? (Is it original or a numbers matching replacement?) Why would you do that? If I wanted to try something different, say a new Holly or Speed Demon, I would still keep the "numbers matching original", if that's what it is.... MJ

It is the real original carb from the car .....

When I bought it, the original 1st owner had a second carb in the cargo area.
It is also a numbers matching carb.

The one I have on ebay is this one (numbers match etc ...), not the one currently running on it.
That one is the factory installed carb.

Call the restoration parts places and ask 'em for a numbers matching BB Qjet & you'll understand pretty quickly. I was quoted as high as $1100 for an original 7029215 carb for a '69 big block.

However, you can get a fully restored '69 7029201 big block carb for an El Camino, which so far as I can tell is completely identical to the 7029215, for $200 from Recarbco (matter of fact, they will tell you it's the same carb--I had a bit of an argument with them over that, couldn't make them understand why I wanted a 215 carb instead). I just bought a '73 GMC big block Qjet on ebay for $9.

It's all supply and demand.

[EDIT] I just looked at your auction--looks like your high bidder is a carb rebuilder (his user name is Carbguy). He'll clean it up and sell it to someone for double what he pays you for it, I'll bet.

JB

Nice looking '72 454 Bill. What's that color of green they had that year? My '71 454 was originally Brands Hatch Green and it will go back that way in time. Although, I do like black(not a color for '71) which is on it now and would keep it that way had it been done with some class. And like you I had an extra Q-Jet sent with mine. I was hoping it was the original carb, but Lars and the rest confirmed it was not. I unloaded it(FREE) on Lars. I'd still like to find an original carb as that's the only thing not number's matching on mine with it being a '68 holley carb.

Curious??? What are the date codes on the two "numbers match" carbs you have? If you're serious about keeping original parts, I'd check the date codes in addition to the carb numbers. I'd sure as heck keep the "original original" since it will have the proper date code for your car.

Restorers will pay big money for an original "number" carb, WITH a date that corresponds to their car's build date. Chuck

JB....I have a 201 on mine with the correct dates and I believe it is the original based on a few things. Of course I really can't prove that. At least it had never been opened when I got the car. According to Lars who claims his information comes from Rochester the 201 IS listed as a corvette, chevelle, chevy 396/427 carb. I know NCRS doesn't recognize it but, because of the strike and all, late 69's could have all sorts of anomallies. Lars says he has seen several 69's with the 201's that he knows are original. We my never solve all of the puzzles about our cars.

:iagree:

After a long search I found the correct carb for my car with an all important correct date. Although restored it cost me over $600 and I was happy to get it. :chevy

That's why origional or restored to origional condition cars bring and retain the BIG $$$$$$ and modified cars are worth consideraly less$$$ no matter how much you have invested in it! I have both so I"m not prejudic. Thad :smash:

I second what Chuck has said. Make sure that the one you're selling is not the original one for the car. Check the dates on both carbs and post them here, along with the build date of your car. You may be making an expensive mistake here just to pocket a few hundred $ in the short term.

My source for this info is questionable so please correct me if you know better - At the time your carb was made Carter was well known for making carbs for I think Chrysler. GM decided they wanted a carb that wasn't associated with Chrysler so Carter agreed that Quadrajets made for GM would be called Rochester Quadrajets (since they were made in the Carter factory in Rochester NY). Perhaps your carb is worth more because very few "Carter Quadrajet" carbs were made in comparison to the amount of "Rochester Quadrajets" made?

Many carb rebuilders will put together a "Frankencarb" Q-jet for you and jet it according to the part number you are looking for. Theoretically, in function it should perform like the model # that you are replacing but it may not necessarily be a true "numbers matching" carb. You may have been comparing a "replacement" 7029201 to a "numbers matching" 7029215 carb.

Ditto on checking the date codes on your carbs before you sell one of them to make sure that the one you're left with matches your car.

I know on my '68 that the Q-jet for my application was a one year only, Corvette only, big block only, standard transimission only application. When you start whittling down the number of Q-jets out there by excluding all of the possible combinations that do not fit this criteria, the numbers produced becomes very small.

Example:
Out of roughly 28,000 Corvettes produced in 1968 there were a bit over 7,000 produced with the L68 427 option. Figure that roughly 75 % of those were standard transmissions, that leaves you with about 5600 carbs produced for my application. Apply the 6 month rule for leeway in dates that NCRS allows, that leaves about 2800 carbs that would be appropriate for my application that were ever produced. Now figure that probably 70% of those carbs at some point were gunked up and thrown away or replaced with aftermarket or service carbs (before people realized their value). That leaves about 840 carbs out there that are even appropriate for my application (not that even they may be available for me to purchase).

My numbers are approximate, but you get the idea how finding a numbers matching Q-jet can become a treasure hunt and can command these outrageous prices accordingly. Also consider that in '72 the fraction of Corvettes built with the 454 option was a much smaller number than with 427's in '68. Your carb may be a lot more rare than you think. Not to mention the value added for a collector who is restoring his big block '72 to the hilt and wants it competely "correct".

Hey guys ....

Thanks for all the great info. Now it all makes much more sense.

I did the date code research and the one on my car is the right one. The one I'm selling is just a numbers matching carb, which coincedently is close in date code to the one I have running. I guess the old owner just had a second one for some reason.

Myabe I will get lucky and the carb will fetch 500.00 think of all the new parts I can but for mine ... :yesnod:

Anyways .. I really appreciate all your help.

To "bgrice": The color is Elkhart Green - beleive it was only color option for 72 and 73

Thank you all.

Not bad. Actually, Carter built Q-jets were built by Carter in St. Louis on Grand Ave. The plant was just a couple miles southeast of the Corvette assembly plant. GM had Carter build Q-jets for the added capacity. (I worked there in their later days, long after the Q-jets were built, but the parts, history and old-timers were still there.) :yesnod:
