Default 83 Corvette question....

How many were made? what design were they C3, C4. And why were ther so few? I understand there were big problems in the design. (which answers my second question)

There were no 83's. GM sold off the last 82's they had and took pre-orders for the 1984 C4. The only 83 in existance is in the Nat'l Corvette Museum.

The design is C4 and they built I think 40 cars of which all were destroyed by GM except two. One was stolen in Georiga and the other one is a white with blue interior which is sitting in the NCM.

The 83 Corvette passed all standards for 84 cars and GM brought the car out in March of 83 and built them until July 84. That is why they built 51,547 cars.

There actually were several 83's ... but none were sold to the public.. One of those made is remaining.. The others were used in evaluations and crash tests...

As others have said, there were too many problems to be fixed to get the new "C4" design out on time for the '83 model year, so the problems were fixed, and production started early for the '84 model.

The original 40 or so production vehicles were never sold (never hear of one being stolen), but were destroyed except for this one ...

... and this 1/2 one that was above the factory doors for a while ...

Of that one only the body is truely 83 and probably some of the 83 / early 84 specific thigns (that must have been added when they completed it). As far as I know that body was found stored away in the back of the bowling green plant, that's why it survived.

Go look at the white pre-production 83 in the museum and it is obvious why production was delayed. Fit and finish is horrible. No two body panels fit right to each other.

"Saw blades didn't come out till later (like 86, 87 or 88) why dies that have them?"

Good Question :skep:
Might have to post that in the C4 section.
I didn't know enough about it at the time to ask the question.

It looks like those wheels were an option in '88, but they were on a prototype shown in '87.
I don't know if they existed before '87, if the wheels were added to the 1/2 car as an afterthought or what.
I just vaguely remember them telling us that it was cut in half (can't remember why) and somebody grabbed it and decided to mount it above the doors.

yeah, they still had alot of bug working out to do.

You may or may not realize, but c4s are complicated little cars, even by today's standards.

When the c5 came out they boasted about how it had about 1500 less parts than the c4 did.

:bs Nope, not this idea-if this WOULD have been THE case, C4s would have never have been made :lolg: :lolg: :lolg:

I have heard of "one" of the 83' vettes being stolen..is ashamed..going to be pretty hard to sell on the market..knowing you have the only 83' in Public Existance.
