Default Just weighed my car, big suprise for GTech users

Just weighed my car with me in and half a tank of gas, no spare tire. The weight was 1350kg or 2970lbs. On the door it says GVW 3650lbs, looks like an adjustment might be in order for GTech HP meausement.

My read on this is: add another passenger 200lbs
add spare tire 40lbs ?
add half a tank of gas lbs ?
add cargo lbs ?
= ~ 650 lbs

wow thats really pretty light. I think the 80 model year was lighter than previous years due to more plastics and overall lighter material. Nice.

I want to weigh mine now. I just picked up a gtech and input 3500 for HP. Just a guesstimate from door reading. I wonder if on yours they just used the same tag as previous years?

GVW is weight of vehicle with full gas, and two (four) passengers. Right? Or did I mess that up.

Where did you get it weighed?

Wayne, look at the 'curb' weight on the same label. GVW (gross vehicle weight) is with all payload. Take curb subtract 200 lbs for passenger and guestimated weight for missing fuel, and adjust your weight (200 is what manufactureres use) accordingly. Should give you pretty close to what you are getting.

Where did you go btw?

That's curb weight. GVW is max allowed weight will all payload.

It's all that helium that you pumped into your tires and butt to lighten the load for your 1/4 times at the track. :lolg:

I am going to head to a weigh station today if possible and check mine out.

You know...I never understood....why the hell are vettes so heavy? I mean everyone thinks that since theyre fiberglass that they are light cars. And It would seem so to me too. Youve got a fiberglass body, youve only got two seats....so what the hell is it that makes them so heavy?

Whoa, guess my hp measuresments are off!!! I put 3500 for my '80, with just me in it, and 3/4 tank of gas, and I still have the spare tire.

desi is correct - I am surprised you have a GVW sticker in a vette. If you had a van with heavy duty suspension that was built to carry 2 tons, the GVW would be 2 tons more than the actual weight of the van. But coincidentally.... or maybe not, my vette weighs around 3650 lbs fully loaded (with me in it) MJ

MNJack, let's not even bring up GAWR (f) and GAWR (r). That'll really cause a confusion :lolg: :lolg: :lolg:

Just a guess would be the big, heavy steel frame. Also I forget what year but they started putting steel reinforcements in the doors as well.

Modern frame cars take advantage of hydroformed steel. Car manufacturer gets to use less steel and in return get a stiffer, lighter frame. Re-design our cars with a tubular chassis and I expect you'd see a decent drop in weight.

It's pretty ironic that fiberglass can be holding us back from having lighter cars. I'm talking unabody. Where the car IS the frame. This is part of the reason you can get a Honda Accord that seats four weighing in at 2,989 pounds.

Yes, the later C-3's are lighter due to a weight reduction especially in the doors, hood, and differintial.

Of course I'd wonder what 600+ ft-lbs of torque would do to an Accord? There are good points to having a stout frame underneath the body...

Ever seen a Cobra with a 427 run at the track, I watched one last year blow the doors off Vipers, ZO6's and Agostino's race ready Camaro. He had only finished assembling it the weekend before and was getting some baseline runs in before he started to mod his car.

Yes indeed, those cars are dangerously light. My buddy has a 302 in his and he has serious traction problems, still he runs high 12's.

I just read the door label again and it says 3850lbs not 3650lbs and a capacity of 450lbs

Got it weighed at the city dump at Brittania and Terry Fox. I thought the scale could be off too but it is a city dump and it has two scales one wen you drive in with your load and one when you drive out they weigh you after you dump off your load so they know how much to charge so I imagine they are calibrated according to ISO9000 standards.

Maybe someone else can get their '80 weighed to confirm this

EDIT: actually I read the door one more time with my bifocals this time and it say MAx Load - 450lbs and 2 passengers, it kinda make sense now because at 200 lbs per passenger this adds up to 850 lbs, subtract that from 3850 and you get 3000lbs pretty close to what I got at the scales
