Sent a set of '69 headrests to Rik's to get new foam and get them remolded with ABS like original. They look really good, but the red is a couple of shades brighter than the red of the rest of the interior of my car. I don't know if their '69 red is different from GM's, or if my interior has darkened over the years, but it does look a little funky to me. Should I send 'em back, or should I just mount 'em and live with it. Or should I try to darken them with interior "dye"? Whatchall think?
Re: Color not quite right--would you send it back? (JB)
I would most likely send it back.
I am 19, and not the most forgiving "business person" out there. Did you show him the colour you wanted? or, did he have the car when he did the work? If so he should've matched it.
You do not need to be rude at all, ask him if he would be willing to dye it himself maybe. He might have more experience than you in that... or offer him a little more cash if you are on the soft side. but, myself....

As in, if its not right... you should not be the one to take the bite.

Reds are really a tough color to match. Especially when dealing with different materials. Did you order by a specific color code or did they have a sample to work from ?

Unless vinyl, dye, paint or carpet is from the same lot I doubt you will ever get a perfect match. Thats just the way it is. I redyed a faded vinyl interior that came out pretty good for a Bubba car. It all matched, if nothing else.

Ordered them by specific color code. Since they were sent back from an address different from Rik's, I assume they contract this service out, so I doubt they could do much in the way of adjusting things for me. I suspect they'd tell me what EdT said, that interiors will never match perfectly. If it were just a tiny bit off, I don't think it'd bug me, but with the headrests in place they look a much brighter red. I'll probably take the car to my local paint dealer and get their sample book for SEM interior "dye" and see if I can get a can that's a little closer to the color of the rest of my interior.

If they are red you must order the Lucy Ricardo seats.
I have dealt with Rik's and they are one of the better suppliers. Call them and see what they will do for you. Your color should not be that far offfrom the original.
Is your interior original? If it was changed previously its going to be real tough to match.

I have to disagree. It's darn near impossible to get a perfect color match. First, you have different dye lots. It's like buying wallpaper. If you run out and order another roll, if it's not from the same dye lot, it won't match.
Second, you've got the issue of fading and aging in your interior. It would be pure luck to find a perfect match. The solution? Take a piece of your original interior to a professional auto shop, have it scanned, and get a pint/quart of vinyl interior dye mixed to match.
You could order 6 sets of headrests from 6 different suppliers, and I'll bet that none of them would match perfectly. Chuck
