Default Mystery 430 Engine

Just reading my How to Restore & Modify your Corvette 1968-82 and the big block engine section mentioned that Chevy was reseaching a 430 engine to replace the 427. The secret was that it had a 4.44" Bore x 3.47" stroke vs. the 4.25" Bore and 3.76" stroke of the 427. Interesting. Too bad they did not go forward with it :(

I believe the mystery engine your speaking of was actually the engine that chevy put together for the can am series. I think they even went larger than 430 later on in an all aluminum engine before the series was dropped. They made a ton of power and revved like you wouldn't believe.

I read about that one, it was in a mid year. Put out around 600 or 700 hp. Was way more powerful than that hoped, seems they only made 2 or 3 of them.

Wait, I might be confusing it with the 377 sb that was raced. It had a unique bore/stroke that is no the same as the destroked 400.

That's seems like a great idea, because most of an engine's frictional losses come from piston/cylinder wall interaction. A larger bore and shorter stroke seems like it would make the engine more efficient and able to handle more RPM's since the MPS would be lower.

Is there a way to get to 4..44" Bore & 3.76" stroke? Offset grinding with sleeves??

a 502 block has a 4.470 bore and just add a 3.5 stroke crank.
