I have to be one of the dumbest people on the planet
I was pulling the speedo/tach cluster, to replace the wiper switch on my 79. I removed the plastic covering, and then as I was working I bumped the speedo needle, and it broke like a twig :cry :cry :mad
What really makes me mad is that I had bought this unit not long ago. It's the 140mph speedo.
So, am I going to have to replace the whole unit? I saw a replacement needle at Ecklers, but I don't think it includes the pin, which is what's broken.

Hmmm... I know Ecklers does rebuild services for guages, so that means they must have all the different parts. I bet if you call and ask to talk to someone who does rebuilds you can get the parts. I'm sure the people who answer the phone will say they dont have the pin becuase its not in the catalog.
It's a place to start anyway.

Hay why you trying to steal my title? Anyway you can more than likely get it fixed at a local shop that does speedometer and dash work. I don't what your area is like but here in SE PA I took my 79 to a speedo shop and had the speedometer fixed and had it calibrated at the same time. look in the yellow pages. :yesnod:

I did exactly the same thing on my '79 whilst trying to prise off the steering
wheel with some completely unsuitable tool! ..... i recall coming out with a string of swear words and even made a few new ones up :cuss
.... still, i managed to glue mine back together. :D

If bubba was there he would break out the superglue....even if he had to overlap it a bit. :smash: :jester

Re: I have to be one of the dumbest people on the planet (shotgun_000)
I sent mine out to corvette clocks by roger. Cost me 300 plus because I didn't have a cashiers check, driver wouldn't take cash, I had to follow the truck for an hour back to the main delivery office which still would not take cash so I ended up losing three hours, between the bank and the truckdriver. So I may not be able to help much but I was just letting you know what not to do.

Re: I have to be one of the dumbest people on the planet (shotgun_000)
I have an idea of how to fix it, but I don't know if it will work.
I'm going to pull the speedometer out, and attempt to pull the pin out that is broken. Then, pull the other half out of the speedometer pointer, and try to solder the two pieces together. At work I have some really nice soldering equipment, so I think it's possible.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one that's done this
I'll keep this thread updated, for anyone else that might been in the same boat. :chevy

This sounds like a real predicament.
The first thing your going to need to do is grab something relatively small, but potentially dangerous... And throw it across your garage.
:banghead:
After that, give my dad a call and he will help you sell your car to a blind widow. Maybe you'll have better luck on the next one... Rough break :jester

I don't know about your area, but Commercial Speedometer here in West Sacramento can fix about anything. I did a very similar thing on mine. As I was putting it all back together, I somehow bent the needle in against the face! It would swing up to about 40 mph and start rubbing. I disconnected it for now so it wouldn't mess up the face. Besides, Bubba destroyed the housing trying to get it out without lowering the column :mad !
