I've finally got around to doing the transmission job. I've got the exhaust and driveshaft out and now I need to pull the shifter. I took out the console in the car and the seat assembly and I can clearly see all the shift linkage, but...

How does it come out? The Haynes manual has some vague nonsense that I can't quite understand. I can see that there is a mount that is bolted to the crossmember that seems to be holding the shifter assembly in. Should I unscrew the levers from the transmission and then unbolt the mount and just pull it out? How does this stuff work?

It's just held on by 2 bolts holding it to the bracket. You should be able to feel the bolt ends towards the passenger side of the bracket. The nuts are welded to the bracket so you only have to remove the bolts. You are one day late for a pic, put mine in yesterday. :)

Reinstalled mine this weekend. Taking it out isn't a problem. Two bolts. Access one from the top and one from the bottom on the main bracket. Disconnect the linkage from the transmission and the entire thing will slide right out from the bottom. The rough part is getting it back in. You need to have triple jointed arms. :banghead:
Let me know if you need pics. I think I have most of an old shifter laying around.

Thanks for the tips. To disconnect the linkage from the transmision, do I just take the bolts off?

Just pull the bolts and pop the bracket out of their seats. What are you pulling the shifter for?

Just take the 3 linkage bolts off and that's it. Try to write down the availabe thread distance between the connector and the end of the shaft. It'll be a guide when you reinstall it. Your shifter allingment should then be almost set.

Good time to clean it up, mine with filthy. Have you shorten your throw? If you look at the shifter levers coming off the tranny there are 2 holes in the levers for 1/2 and 3/4, use the lower ones (closer to the pivot point) and the shifter will travel less for each gear and not hit your shift plate.

When you unbolt the shift rods from the tranny I would suggest you tape them all together so the remain the same length. This will save you a lot of hassle later on when adjusting the linkage.
