Default Broke the car doing a burnout

:(

So last night a friend and I are in a parking lot and I did a little burnout. Dropped the clutch at about 2500-3000rpm and promptly broke the car. It did the burnout, but right after that I notice that I can't let the clutch out without a terrible clanking sound. Even in neutral, as soon as I let the clutch out it will clank around until I push the clutch in again, at which point the sound fades away. It still drives forward, but it's sounding just awful.

I won't be able to take a look at it tomorrow, but does anyone have any idea of what might be broken?

Thanks.

It sounds like you broke or chipped a tooth on of one of the gears in the tranny. I did that in a Camaro that I had years ago & it had the same symptoms.

Ugh. How much is it going to cost to fix that?

I see it's comedian nite! :D

Nothing worse than letting out the clutch(even in neutral) and a grinding sound. Well... maybe a rod slapping around inside the block is a little worse sounding.

I agree, rod noises are the worst! Especially when they come after doing something immature and fun. :banghead: Joe

I wouldn't drive it, you'll only make it worse. This really does sound like a busted gear.

When you put the tranny in gear the cluster will stop spinning. So, if you put the tranny in neutral and let out the clutch to get the gears spinning, then put the clutch in and then shift into gear does the clanking suddenly stop? If so then it's the tranny, if not it could be the throw out bearing, cause when you let out the clutch the bearing will then be free to kick around. The bearing runs on a small extension of the front tranny cover. Sounds to me like your extension broke and the bearing is loose...I bet it's hard to put into gear too. I bought a used one at a shop near me for $5, and a gasket for $2.50 and my problem was solved...hopefully your problem will be just as easy.

I've broken gears too, and when you break a tooth or two you will not be able to smoothly drive forward or backward. So, it doesn't sound serious to me. But, I wouldn't drive it...have it towed home and drop the tranny to have a look.

i agree with RnR. not saying it can't be the tranny but i think your looking more at throw-out bearing or pressure plate, maybe even clutch springs. you won't know until it comes out.

I think rocknroll head the nail right on the head. It sounds more like a bearing than a gear to me. good luck
