Thoughts on chambered exhaust??
I decided that I'll get a set of under car chambered exhaust for my 70 coupe. I have built a mild (400hp) 350 and am wondering if this would be a good exhaust for my engine, with headers. Also where is the best place to get chambered? Can anyone give me an idea of how loud it'll be on a sclae of 1-10. I'm looking for about a 13 LOL!! Oh and if anyone has a sound clip that would be sweet too. Thanks alot!! :chevy

I think Allen's exhaust has the best ones. I cant find the website right now, but they go to Carlsile every year. I have heard the chambered exhaust are very restrictive because of all the kinks in the pipes. They sound awesome. Definatly and 8 out of 10 :D

I switched from chambered to flowmasters & added an H-pipe.
I have a stock 350 and chambered exhaust sounded horrible. The flows sounded slightly better but had some serious resonance. If you have never experienced resonance, it is like being inside a tin can with a tuning fork. The H-pipe eliminated 95% of the problem though, very happy now.

My Mid American chambered pipes fit like a glove (only 299.99). Suggest you try them 1st as they are b4 adding and "H" or "X" pipe. When I put in my "H" pipe it really took the snap, crackle, and pop out of them. They are more than civl at cruzin rpm's but rate about a 12 (really) when ya stand on it. Its just an awesome sound that ya gotta hear to believe!

I am in the process of looking for an exhaust system for my 77. I am probably going to get the chambered exhaust from Mid America. I am going to have headers so I would buy the ones designed for headers but what would I have to fabricate and weld on them for the pipes to work. Sorry for changing the topic sorta. I just thought some people would like to know.

would a set of flowmasters or something like that be louder and flow better?
Chambered is restrictive. With many wanting to do something external w/ an internal combustion engine, one thing you can do for more power & even better gas milage is a better ex. Why bother putting a restrictive setup on.

I went from stock to headers with stock mufflers and then added chambered
exaust with H pipe. I bought mine from MAD before they offered them with
cars with headers. I told the sales person I didn't need the pipe to hook up
to manifold and they cut 100 bucks off bill, cost me 200 dollars instead of 300.
As far as noise, they can be as quiet or as loud as you want to make them. It
depends on how much acceleration you require. WOT will set off car alarms
and wake the comfortably dead and **** off neighbors. When I leave for work in the morning at 5:15 I go from first to third to fourth. As far as being restrictive,
I ain't had mine on a dyno to get a before and after comparison but going by
performance it's better than stock. I haven't noticed any annoying resonace
and I drive to and from work on xways with radio at a normal level. It's
louder than my Cadillac but thats to be expected. Buy em! Steve

My $.02: My chambered pipes are heading into their 4th summer. All I can say is that they are a hell of alot less restrictive than the Stock 2 Y-Pipe system, you cant BEAT the sound (to ME anyway), and I dont have any mufflers hanging down for all the world to see. My racin' days are over, so I really dont care whether I'm a couple tenths slower in the Quarter mile w/closed headers.......The SOUND is EVERYTHING....... :D :D :D :D :D

As Ganey stated, it's probably not the best system for all out high performance, but for my use it's great. I don't race so that's not an issue.
Here's my take from my site shortly after I installed the chambered system.

Re: Thoughts on chambered exhaust?? (1970 Stingray)
I have had the 2-1/2" chambered system on my '74 for a couple years. I strongly recommend an H-pipe to cut the resonance and popping/crackling, as others have already stated.
I love the sound! With headers and a 400+ HP small block these things really scream at WOT. Just about made my buddy deaf while passing him at WOT in first gear after installing the AFR 195s, it was awesome.
I have been wondering how restrictive they are...I am thinking of going to the track and making a couple passes, them uncorking the headers altogether and comparing the ET and MPH to estimate the power loss. Not sure if I will or when.

Im thinking at the drag strip it will only be a few tenths of a second difference. I think I am giong to go ahead and get the chambered exhaust from Mid America, when I get some money.

Re: Thoughts on chambered exhaust?? (RCDriveryo)
Ok yah I think I'll try them. I'm not to worried about the resonance because my car has it already and my last vette had it to. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Thoughts on chambered exhaust?? (RCDriveryo)
Restrictive is relative, depends on power. One thing you guys w/ chambered under or sidepipes can do is run more ex. duration on the cam & 1.6 rockers.
No more restrictive ex. for me!
On my first Hot Rod, initially ran straight through glasspacks. Power had been increased greatly. During a run it blew the glasspacks off & took off like a blower or nitrous had been switched on !

Re: Thoughts on chambered exhaust?? (1970vette_02wrx)
I put chambered ex. in my 73 with the ZZ4, purchased from Mid-America. Once I got them to fit right and installed an H-pipe, I couldn't be happier. It has a nice rumble at idle, then is almost like uncapped headers when you stomp on it. The flow restriction is bull, there are fins inside of the pipe that swirl the exhaust around, but the exhaust doesn't change direction or have to go through any baffling material like in a muffler. Unfortunately it does set off car alarms and attract police. These systems are illegal in some states. J.

Re: Thoughts on chambered exhaust?? (RCDriveryo)
My 77 had chambered exhaust when I got it and it was the worst sounding system I've ever had. They are loud at WOT and so is the resonance, it drove me to hate driving my vette. I trashed them and put true duels, H-pipe & dynomax super turbos, still have resonance and not real crazy about sound, but at least I can hear myself think.

No, the kits from Mid-America don't come with the H-pipe, but its a necessity. Without it, there is quite a bit of popping going down hills. The pipe pretty much eliminates it. J.

I had H pipe installed the day I put on the chambered exaust. The guys did
a nice job too. It's put together with a slide pipe and clamps. It doesn't leak
and I can dismantle each pipe by itself. Slick if I need to put mufflers back
on a/c law. Steve
