Default Time for a beer.... I stuck the freakin hood closed!

As BSeery once posted in another thread....

Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam!
Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam!
Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam! Dam!

Get the point? I'll get it open, but not tonight. time!

I had one of those premonitions that told me to NOT click down the passenger side as it was pretty stiff, but I did it anyway. Common sense said to back out the studs on both sides to create some play, but nope.... I played Russian Roulette. As soon as it clicked I knew I was screwed. You know that sound. Solid as a rock. Push down the hood above the latch and no play at all. I repeat.... DAM! The driver's side comes loose, so with a little of help and some fishin' it will come loose. Then, I'll use the common sense and back out that stud that locks into the hood.

l spent the morning with the drivers side stuck, after taking the hinges off in the front, l was able to free it. l adjusted the pin so it was closing nicely on the drivers side, now the passenger side is stuck, solid as a rock. As frustrating as today was, tomorrow is another day.

SAMMAN...

I've been wanting to say this. That is one FINE looking '68 red vert you have. Stuck hood or not. The best of all worlds with the classic chrome bumper look.... sidepipes.... and aftermarket tires/rims that wake it to make it original. Kudos!

Not a good day for the red verts. :(

mapman....

Thanks for the link. I'll look for those ports tomorrow to attempt to release the hood.

Mine is also STUCK right now. Happened Friday after work - just putting the hood latches on after a 3 year resto. Passenger side appears to be hanging on a misaligned "tepee". The latch apears to release, the hood pops up maybe 1/2 inch and is stuck right there. I can move it up and down about 1/8 to 1/4 inch, but no matter which way I try to force it, I can't seem to get it over the ridge! I wouldn't even go out to the garage yeaterday until about 6 last evening - tried for about 20 minutes and walked away. Not sure what to do next!

ANY suggestions would be appreciated.

How about letting me in on some solutions from you other "victims"....

Pop Your Hood-Not Your Cork

I was adjusting my hood - screwed the pins down a bit to lower the hood... screwed them in a bit more... just enuf to slam my hood down on the the distributor shielding wingnuts! :( MJ

Update from this side.....

The driver's side of the hood is a breeze to pop open through the port in the firewall in the wiper area. I don't think you can do it with a screwdriver like was posted in link above, but I had a 1/4" x 3ft aluminum rod in my garage that I could do some bending on. It wasn't a matter of a minute & I had that side popped up. I just tried it to see how it works as that's the side that isn't stuck. Been out in the garage 3 times this afternoon trying different things, but no luck on the passenger side since it's not a matter of shoving the mechanism foward like the driver's side. With the latch in a bind it's difficult to tell if I'm actually pushing down on the trip lever with the now *modified* aluminum rod. When I get the rod bent exactly right and get it open I'll patent the darn thing.

Anyone else had any luck? Maybe a M-80?

Update: Finally got it. Someone here said something about removing the hinge bolts - that turned out to be the ONLY way I could get it free. Everything adjusted fine now and it opens.

Even took the wife for the first ride of the season!

Update, after trying for a couple of hours today through the port in the wiper firewall area passenger side, the hood is still stuck :banghead: There is no play at all just very solid. Looks like the only way to open it is going to be loosening or removing the front hinges again.

another trick is to drill a 1" hole in the back side of either inner fenderwell so you can get a hook type tool to grab the cable and release it. then plug the hole with a valve cover grommet.

:iagree: These guy are 100% correct.

After mine went, I added a small piece of cable to each side. Dropped it down towards tha ground so if it ever happens again, I'll reach under and unlock either or both sides. I look at it like insurance. :smash:
