Default POLL: Modified L48's vs Unmodified L82's

I'm kinda curious here about the engine your car came with and whether or not you decided to modify it. So my question is, how many of you decided to modify your original engines (blown engines obviously don't count). My guess is that more L82's than L48's have survived intact. But I've been very wrong before!

We'll allow minor external tweaks, like carb, manifold & headers. But anything changes to the block itself counts as a mod. Let the voting begin!l

Bigger cam, higher compression pistons, balanced rotating assembly, fluid damper, and Aluminum Heads!
Not to mention the other stuff you mentioned, headers, intake, carb, distributor, yadda, yadda...

The horsepower difference between the two is so small, it's kind of irrelevant. That is, until you factor in the inherent value of having an unmolested L-82. If I had an L-82, I think I would have tried to stay as close to stock as possible. Which proves your point.

Still, a lot of the changes I made to my L-48 are invisible enough, that I don't know how much it actually ruins the value. Had the heads and manifold not been shot, I probably could have put them aside, for posterity. But chose not to.

And now, the car is so much freaking faster than it was before, I have no regrets about what I did. I think the car is probably worth more, considering what it is.

You should have added the option of:

"Didn't modify the original (L-48 or L-82), but that dog is on the stand."

I had the factory L48. I don't mind, my dad is an old drag racer that knows how to make power. We've got SBC parts lying around. Can't throw a rock without hitting something SBC related in our shop. I'll just take one of his many 350 4bolts and rebuild that into a good reliable 400hp motor. Just a mild engine really. I'll keep the L48 in tact.

I think the engine remained intact until 1999. Then all hell broke loose! :smash: :smash: :smash:

My L48 is stock... for now. I first I need that 200R4 and new diff. I'm busy fixing things before I get to do performance mods. It'll happen sooner or later though. I'm drooling over those AR strokers. I don't think I can do that work for any cheaper.

My '75 L-82 is stock, except true dual exhaust, no EFE, heat riser or vapor canister. Runs fast enough for me the way it is :yesnod:

:iagree:

Mine is stock as well with similar mods - soon to finish the 5 speed and sidepipes. new engine under construction now - using no L-82 parts in this new engine.

Origianl L-82 will be kept - not that my car is original otherwise. LOL

Original L-48 completly untouched. Once i'm out of school i'll build a very healthy SBC and drop it in while keeping the original engine stored.

The single biggest difference in power output between the L48 and the L82 is the cam. If have an L48 and you want the smoothest possible idle, you already have it. If you have an L48 and you want a significant power increase, install an L82 cam or an aftermarket cam.

The L82 had headers when I bought it with 18 yers ago with 29K miles. I did add a new intake and carb and some point.

The L82 is old tech. It now sits disassembled in the corner of the garage. Now running a more powerful and efficient ZZ4 motor with all original emissions hooked up including rams horn exhaust manifolds to cure header leaks.

Tearing down my original L82 when I first got the car about the only non-original parts I found inside was the .030 over TRW pistons put in after it first rebuild. Everything else that was supposed to have a part# was correct so either they were re-used or replaced with the right stuff. I opted to stick it on a stand and run a new ZZ4. The original motor will go back in the car if I ever decide to sell it.

I have a completely stock L-48 in my '79. What a dog.....need some HP. I have been out of the hot rodding circuit for awhile now, but ready to rejpoin the fun. Have been looking at what mods will give the old L48 a boost.
I looked at cams and intake manifolds. The GM site lists Hyd cam P/N 3896962 as the cam from both the L48 and the L82...was it the same cam???
After my May inspection I can remove the cat..25 year olds do not require emmisions here

Stock L-48 block with matching numbers. Still has the original pistons, rods, and crank. Put a set of SR Torquers on it with stainless 2.02 x 1.60 valves and roller rockers. Put a Crane powermax 272 cam in it with 216 intake and 228 exhaust duration at .050. Installed a Professional Products polished intake and Edelbrock Thunder Series 650 cfm carb. A set of Dynomax Ceramacoat headers run into 2 1/2 inch pipes and out Dynomax Ultraflow stainless mufflers. The rest of the car is stock except for the sound system. Do I ever regret modifying it? Not on your life. It now runs the way I always felt a Vette should run. It's never going to break into the 12s at the track but it's a lot of fun around town and quicker than 95% of the cars on the road today.

Motown Block, Scat 3.75" crank, Scat 6" rods, Ross Pistons, Crane Hydraulic Roller cam, Barry Grant 850??? carb (forgot the specs) I've got the original L-82 sitting on a stand, along with the 4-speed.

Originally was L-48, now the block is from -70 L65 Camaro and heads from -73 L48 vette. I have no idea where or when the engine was changed...
