Does any one know why this tranny would have dextron II in side instead of Gear oil.
My friend bought one of these trannys in hopes to install it into his 75.
but we pulled the Speedo gear out and out came ATF then I noticed on the side of it it says Dextron II only.
but why is there clutches inside this tranny or somthing.
thanks in advance.

Most new trannies use Dexron IIE. Tremec TKO, T-56 etc are Dexron IIE. Reason as far as I can figure out is that ATF has lower viscosity so saves gas. You need an oil that is not too slippery, otherwise the synchros don't work. Since ATF isdesigned to make cltuchpacks hold, I guess it also works on synchros.

The newer transmissions have small needle bearings inside and need the ATF to get in the tight spots. You would destroy these needles if you used gear oil.
