I Just Purchased A New Cam!
I just purchased a new cam for this season. Here are the specs on it:
Part #: Crane F-256/3634-2S-6
Description: Performance usage, good mid-upper RPM torque and horsepower, bracket racing, basic RPM range 4200-7200.
Cam Type - Mechanical Flat Tappet
Advertised Duration - 292 Intake / 300 Exhaust
Duration @ .050" - 256 Intake / 264 Exhaust
Lobe Seperation - 108
Gross Valve Lift - .618" Intake / .638" Exhaust
I got a good deal on the camshaft brand new and this is the cam that I have been wanting for a while now. Of course I still have to buy the lifters and springs. I have a micrometer to measure my spring install height, now I can assemble my own heads (that's the only thing that held me back from doing it the first time).
Desktop dyno shows an increase of 20 horsepower @ 6000RPMs over my Comp Cams 294S .595"/.595" cam. All in all it should be a nice improvement over my current cam. I have the gearing to back the cam up (wide ratio T10 4 speed w/ 4.11 gears). I will probably change the cam out in the summer. For now I want to get a bunch of runs in with my current setup to get myself a good baseline for comparison.
I'm so excited! :D

Ive been looking for a new cam, I got the "While im at it" problem going. I started repairing a headlight bracket and now I have the hood off and the radiator and support out of the car. Plus im replacing the water pump, fuel pump and belts "while im at it". heh :) ive heard the crane 272/272 is a good mild cam.

Olivier:
I was told by 427hotrod that even with a decent set of oval port heads, big blocks like a lot of lift. He said anything under about .600" - .630" lift and you are leaving power on the table. My heads seem to flow pretty good and it just feels like my motor needs more cam.
So how's the quest for 11s coming along?
Gordon:
The 108 lobe seperation is going to make for a really choppy idle. I'm really excited about the cam. Norval ran this cam for awhile whenever his 460 was naturally aspirated and said that if he were to go naturally aspirated again that the Crane F-256/3634-2S-8 would be his choice. I went a little small with my cam whenever I was building my motor because I was unsure as to how it would react with my setup. After using the 294S with my 468 I can honestly say it's a pretty mild cam(for a big block)...I want something a little more wild.

You have some explaining to do :cuss . How do you get your car to effectively launch like that :D . I like the wrinkling slicks (nice touch), what have you done to your rear end. I'm half-afraid to try a hole shot like that for fear of breaking stuff. What transmission are you running? Most importantly...what kind of 60' time is that in the picture....sure looks like she's sticking hard!

Aaron:
Actually my current setup has already turned 12.40 @ 116mph which is plenty fast enough to turn 11.9X or better down the 1/4 mile. I'm not changing the cam until mid summer. I want to break into the 11s with my current setup to get a good baseline for comparison. But if for some unforseen reason I don't break into the 11s with my setup...the cam should do it for sure.
As for heads, my current heads seem to flow rather nicely. This winter coming up I am thinking about pulling the motor and getting some big R-Port aluminum heads and 11:1 compression ratio. But for now, these $450 heads are serving me very nicely.

Just for comparison: 66 convertable with 427 stock motor with the exception of L-88 cam, car had 4.11 gears, close ratio 4 speed muncie, had 9" slicks on it, hooker headers(open of course) and 800 vac carb with factory hi rise intake....car ran 11.50 @ around 120 in quarter mile... 264/269 @ .050 duration with 560/580 lift for cam.

Here's what one of the guys on the Chevelle Forum who used the cam before had to say:
I'm really excited now :)
FYI, I put that cam in a friend's 427 a few years ago, and I can assure you of 1 thing:
That cam THUMPS!!!!!
If you like a cam that tries to shake the fenders off your car at idle, then you've picked a great cam. It sounds absolutely wicked.
The 427 we had it in was a 10-1 oval port motor in a `67 Chevy Nova, and it came on hard at about 4000 rpm and was still pulling past 7000. With your 4 speed, it's gonna be a fun ride!
