You can have your sidepipes jet-hot coated like mine, they look great, and reduce the heat! :mad :flag

I'm thinking about purchasing some fire-resistant cloth to carry with me in the car to drape over the pipes for when I get out of the car. I would think shorter people (like women) would have a very difficult time not burning their legs because they would not be able to step over the pipes. I don't think you get many second dates if you keep burning the girls' legs.

Open them up! The problem is, how do you keep them from rusting?
STS sells a heat guard too

The 69 original optional side exhaust had insulated covers. I installed this exhaust system on my 70 Corvette in 1974 and maintained it for about 10 years. The exhaust covers can get hot, but no one riding in my car including me ever burned their legs.
When the mufflers were new they were not quiet. What I really liked was when I had them on for a few years and the insides of the mufflers were gone, the muffler shell was just an expansion for the exhaust. Really liked the sound, wish it was a LT-1, but the ole 350/300 could make some noise with this exhaust.

1Bad69,
I assume you have Hookers with 4', Who's baffles did you use? CarBelt suggested any of 2 Hooker types (mufflers?) loud and quiet, each $180.
Yes, he's got the 4" Hooker sidepipes. I do too. Trust me when I tell you that you will be disappointed with the Hooker mufflers (they come either glasspacks or "reverse flow"...those are the two types) unless you have a pretty mild smallblock. I have a mild big-block and the Hooker glasspack mufflers absolutely killed power above 3500rpm. It was very noticeable. I yanked them out after 40 miles and sold them for about 1/2 price. What a waste of my $$. I ran open pipes for about two weeks, but it just got obnoxious and I was self-conscious about driving around my neighborhood and had to clutch it every time I saw a cop.

So I got the JCL baffles and modified them for even freer flow. They sound great at idle and low speed cruise, but very loud at full throttle. Perfect. Also, I cannot tell the any power difference b/w open pipes and the JCL baffles. They are worth the $$.

Ya think so? I had an ex sis-in-law, good-looking girl, nice legs, wore skirts & heels often. Burned HER calves on her hubby's side-pipes on his '65. End of skirts, end of heels!!!!! For that reason alone, I'll NEVER put side-pipes on ANY car!!!!!!!!

it's like a habit...when i get in a car i always put my seatbelt on...when i get in the vette i always say the following.."don't slam the door and watch your legs on the pipes"... when the ride is over i say" don't slam the door and watch your legs on the pipes, thanks for riding 1BAD69 and enjoy the rest of your day"....

if the person burns there leg i say " i just F@&KN told you to watch your legs, are you f#%KN STUPID OR WHAT????" :jester

I was thinking of getting the Hooker sidepipes too and was just wondering where to get the JCL inserts, since running just straight open pipes would probably get me into some trouble, since i have a heavy right foot to begin with :chevy -thanx for the help -Danny

Mike, I you just got me in trouble. My little darling just leaned over my shoulders while reading the e-mails about the sidepipes on the computer and in her sweeetest voice asked:
she: ..what you're laughing at?
me: uh,...Nothing sweetheart, just one of those car nuts..1Bad69.
she: what are these? (pointing at the side pipe pics)
me: uh...they're side pipes...to get me more horse power.
she: why do we need more horse power, darling?
me: uh,... to keep up with the other Vette guys during a cruise..
she:...are they expensive?
me: not really, just like any new exhaust system...
she: like how much?!!!!
me: uh.. about $1,500,... or less
she: $1,500!!!!!???? (black clouds start to gather above her)
me: .. I probaly can get cheaper ones (swallowing...) I don't think I need the mufflers.
she: You mean: they're gonna be extra loud? (reading further about the burns and pointing at the side pipes)... Why would you get these stinking DIVORCE PIPES that burn my legs and nylons and clothes and..You only think about yourself... and it is way more than the present you bought me for my birthday last month that, by the way, almost forgot!!!
me: uh,... I was just look'n
she: ...just keep looking!!! (walking away)

I know what 's good for me and I don't want to sleep with the dog in the doghouse for the next couple of days. I'am gonna just keep looking... for the moment.

Mike, Great pic, but this may be as close as I'll ever get to DIVORCE PIPES. Thanks for the virtual header and side pipe installation. I love it.

Massvette
Are you using chrome Hooker headers with 4" or 3" Hooker side pipes JCL inserts? I am considering Chromed hookers with 4" but not sure about inserts.
I'm using ceramic coated Hookers with chrome Hooker side pipes, JCL baffles and polished JCL s/s heat shields.

I run my Hooker Sidepipes open.. and they sound awsome... If you don't want them all that loud.. you can get a set of STS Baffles...
