Default corvette prices out of hand. what is MY car worth.

o.k. guys. i have been looking at various prices for the last few years and i've come to the conclusion that prices are just out of hand.
now that's not to say a true 427 'vert with 15k original miles isn't worth $20K+ but when you have people asking $4-5k for a basket case (and i do mean a basket case) that is an indication that pricing is just getting nuts. i'm not trying to drive down the pricing but i think it's important to our hobby that people who are new to it don't pay bloomington gold prices for a car just because it's fiberglass, especially if many of the engine parts come home in the storage compartment.
so i'm putting my money, or at least my cars value, where my mouth is.
you tell me how much YOU think my car is worth and then i'll tell you how much I think my car is worth. i'm not selling it but i think i am reasonable about value.

1981 L-81/4-speed, white over blue. PS, PW, PL, PM, AC, AM/FM/CASS, PDS, RWDefog
have all smog equipment and a/c but not on the car.
new griffin rad, original is gone
original drivetrain, recently overhauled.
cracked dash and needs new carpet but interior is otherwise in 'good' condition.
two minor hits on fiberglass (cracked but easily repaired).
needs paint. needs weatherstripping
most accessories work, everthing is there.
17" c-4 wheels, many suspension mods (car handles like a vette should but rides like a wagon)
runs like a bat (for an '81) out of hell
picture in signature was taken in december just if your interested.

so what do you guys think? i'll check back in the next day or so and see what the concensus is, then i'll let you know what i think 'real world' value is.

Hmm... Needing paint and w-stripping I'd say around 7-8k.

With new paint, carpet and w-stripping, about 10-11k.

Assuming that:

1) no leaking problems from engine, tranny, rear end
2) suspension has upgraded shocks, springs and bushings
3) good bearings front, rear

average condition tires, paint and interior 8K-9K

If you had new tires, nice new Black paint :D and fresh interior + weatherstrip- Id say 12K - 14K

Brent...

I'd have to guess around 8 grand as well. I do not believe prices are out of hand though. Compared to other collector cars or new cars, the C3's are bargains.

Very well said---anybody check out GTO's, Chevelles & Camaro prices lately??? Seems even if the "original" motor is gone they still want 20K-40K +++ and higher

paul, "....still want 20K-40K". i say they can want all they care to. they're going to be sorely disappointed if they expect me to pay that.
way too many people hooked on 'antiques road show' lately. seems like you could find an authentic 1966 double bubble wrapper sell for $50 on ebay. still constantly amazed at the 'value' of just about everything around me. considering all the junk i can't bring myself to throw away, i'm probably sitting on about $500,000 worth of crap!
as for the subject of my car. if i were looking to buy it, i would expect to pay about 4-4.5k. if i were to sell it and i never heard of the corvetteforum or read any of the mags, i would ask $5k and hope for the best. maybe i'm just a sucker. or maybe i'm just that tight. you decide.

I concur fully, I posted a topic about corvette prices being too high. They are some good cars out there but for those who have basket case vehicles who expect to get top dollar simply because theyre corvettes are smoking something. I seen ads for several wrecked corvettes and Im talking major league damage and the sellers wanting $5k or more. Well PT Barnum once said theres a sucker born every minute. I too have a saying, I was born on a Sunday morning but not last Sunday morning.

Wanting and getting are two different things. About 2 years ago a guy I met a few times was selling a REAL 1967 Camaro Z28. They made very, very few of those in '67. Car was all original and totally restored. All the documentation was there. It was a very nice car. He tried to sell it for a long time and finally settled for low 20's.
