What Is Best Way TO Polish A Black Car
My car is BLACK and was painted about 6 months ago, while shipping to Hawaii, we had the dock strike, it was sitting outside in the sun, rain and what else for two months. It was suppose to never come out of the closed container.
The surface has never been rubbed out or waxed. It feels rough to the touch, but very little fine scatches. My friend said not to rub it out and just use a cleaner wax using only with a orbiter machine. I also have a professional polishing machine. Which is better to use?
I bought a jar of Zymol auto polish today. I also have the 3 stage; 1, 2, and 3 (compound, resin, and wax) product.
What do you guys think is the best way to do this, and with what brand?

I have used Zymol on my vette, which has the most awful paint job you have ever seen (it was painted before I got it by bubba's paint shop...I think they used a brush! ) seriously it has a terrible paint job. After using the Zymol it looked pretty good.

A friend of mine also has a black vette. He had his buffed out and they burned the paint in several places! I won't touch mine with a DA polisher.
I use Maguire's products. I would suggest you clay bar it to remove the surface roughness you mention, followed by a glazing compund. I use Maguire's Show Car Glaze #7. Then I apply Maguire's Hi-Tech Yellow Wax # 26. Do it by hand. I find it brings me closer to my vette! :)

I think it depends on the paint job. Do you know any details about the
paint application ? If it has 2-3 good coats of clear, you might get away
with using the polisher. If it only has a few coats of single stage enamel
or lacquer, then I woudl be very careful not to burn through the edges.
A friend at an auto body said that th eclay bar can be used to get a nice
smooth finish by taking off the 'peaks' where the dust was trapped.
I've never used the clay myself. Apparently, he would use a prep-sol
like solvent to lubricate the surface and rub the clay bar across the surface.
It sounds a bit scary to me - rubbing clay with prepsol on a new paint job.
Rubbing it down by hand with a fine compound is usually safe, but that depends
(again) on the paint application (how many coats of what).

Ive used Zymol on my Black 454 SS, great results. I use the carbon Zymol in a jar, about 48 bucks a jar on my f-Bodies and my C3.

Use Zaino and am a true believer. I used the 3 step Meguiars and thought that my car looked pretty darn nice. Then I used the Zaino. What a difference.
Good Luck!

Kit, You might want to try posting your question in the "car care" section of the forum. You will get some more detailed instructions there on how to treat your car after its stay outdoors. Also, since you describe it as being rough to the touch, it sounds like a good candidate for the "clay" treatment. Excellent for smoothing out a finish. Expect you can get detailed description and instructions in the car care section. :) MJ

Get some of the "Clay-Bar" product from Zaino or Maguires. It will get all the roughness and grime that washing won't get off. I'd recommend NOT using the orbital buffer. Do it by hand and move in straight lines down the length of the car, while your polishing.

I would also recommend using one of the clay bars. I have joined the Zaino clan but I'm sure the other clays are very similar. But see what the Car Care section has to say, there may be some concerns for claying so soon after a paint job.
Also, have you asked the painters? They may offer some good advice too. I remember when I painted my motorcycle the painter recommended not waxing it for like a month or so. And only light washing because the paint takes a while to cure. Course, yours probably "cure" on the dock.

Re: What Is Best Way TO Polish A Black Car (tshort)
I'd use a machine buffer and 3M products like "Pink Glaze" (The stuff high end paint shop use). Zaino is good for paint without inperfections and the "final stage of cleaning", but I'd use 3M first to remove the trash.

Meguires #7 hand glaze works wonders followed by a good wax. After seeing some of these guys cars that have used Zaino I'd almost swear by it without even using it but its a little much for my old tired paint. After I repaint her she'll get only the best but for now Meguires does a wonderfull job.
