I had very annoying squeak problem before switching to Bendix pads that I got from Advance Auto for about $40 for the complete set. Hasn't squeaked since.
Can't really comment on cold weather braking though. Mine hasn't seen the road since October. It's FREAKIN' cold out here! :cry :cry :cry

Good question, I've been wanting to do some brake upgrades myself, unfortunately there's not a whole lot of C3'ers that autocross or roadrace, but there are a few on here such as clutchdust and some other racers that will hopefully chime in.
GKull uses Performance Friction, I believe. I'm sure he'll have more to say when he sees this post.

Raybestos brutestop is a very good street pad. Not meant for racing, but does well when cold & hot and no squeaks. I noticed less pedal pressure compared to the generic organics they replaced and also a consistent pedal pressure as they heat up. The organics would start to feel mushy after some spirited driving with hard stops.

I used Performance friction metalic pads for a few years and they improved with heat. The first stop was the worst but they chewed up my rotors so I went to wagner organic pads to save the rotors.

If you are street only, go with a high friction pad like Hawk HP or EBC Green, or Performance Friction's version. These stop like crazy when cold which is what you'd want.
If you are racing and you use them a lot when hot, then go with Hawk HP+, EBC Red's, etc.

G-Man - Norval is correct about never use metalic unless you would rather replace rotors than pads.
I use PF and I think right now that I have the Z type. Very squeaky during around town use. It just takes a good stomp to quiet them down. It is annoying at times. Some people also complain about the black dust on the wheels. PF has several compounds and I have to look at the box to see which I have. They come with a warranty and they don't make any money off me because I've gone through a few sets and they just give me new ones.

Yup, Performance Friction Z-rated. They are sometimes a little squeaky in the rear around town, but a little extra pedal will quiet them easily. Can't comment on racing application, haven't done any yet, but they seem to be great around town.
I do notice alot of dust, but I wash my car about as much as I drive it so that isn't a problem for me.

Re: what brake pad compound are you using , ferodo, hawk, etc (no_radio)
I have done a lot of work to my braking system and it has really paid off . The first change I made was a set of ZTI O ring pistons and braided hoses . That produced a nice solid pedal with good stopping characteristics . Then I happened upon Norval's post about the hydroboost system, and made the changeover . The results are VERY rewarding ,,,, many thanx Norval . I am now doing a little research on pad compounds and am currently looking at the ferodo ds3000 compounds , they are priced @ 99$ per axle and the specs look good so far . I will post more info when I get a chance to talk to a rep.

ramfire- what is it you like about the hydroboost system? It looks pretty neat and logical. What improvement have you noticed.

The main reason at first that I made the change was to provide room for my fuel system . But the results exceeded my expectations , put simply it makes the car stop like a performance sports car should . My wife drives an awd bmw and the brakes are incredible , it made me realize just how bad our brakes really are . The HB put my vette right in that league .

Thanks- thats quite an endorsement. I figure that sooner or later my brake booster will go and when it does, it seems like a no brainer upgrade.

Just an update , I spoke to the vendor and he strongly recommended the ds2500 compound . Let me point out that I told him up front , rotor wear, pad wear and dust were not a problem for me . I was looking for stopping performance under normal and spirited driving conditions specifically when the brakes might be cool , well I ordered a set . Time will tell !

I use stock (auto parts store) brake pads and they don't squeak.
