Every one I've ever seen has been 7/16-20. The strange thing though is that a coarse thread would be 7/16-14. 16 tpi is a NS (national special) thread, and I can't imagine GM ever using an oddball thread like that in an application where there's no valid reason for it.

I did the same thing! I installed an oven in the garageI that I got off of Craigslist for FREE. Very useful when powder coating parts and didn't stink up the house.

Quick question… how far should the balancer go in? I have the install tool and while cranking it it went on fairly easy. My concern is it still goes without excesive force but the rubber part of the balancer now touches the timing cover, which is not normal. I haven’t started the engine.

Should i just pull it out a bit and call it a day or…?

…and yes it is the right way around and yes the new seal is installed in timing cover and I have lubricated both the seal and the balancer and the crankshaft end.

The balancer is supposed to butt up against a collar on the crank. Somethings not right.

It should not touch the timing cover, I checked mine and I've got roughly 3/8 or 7/16" to an aftermarket Cloyes timing cover, it seems like it may be the wrong balancer. Did you compare it to the old unit?

I have the original harmonic balancer, and original timing cover, I just cleaned and repainted them.

Oh, so you didn't replace the balancer itself? Mine went bad when I first got the car, and the rubber/outer ring was rubbing on the timing cover, it actually rubbed through in one spot, and required me to replace it.

You'll need to buy a new balancer, (measure yours) and get a new one.

I believe my '78 actually had a recall on that. Can't remember which one I used.
