Default Engine swap

I have an 80 coupe that I want to trade out motors. I am looking at the ZZ4 350CI with 355HP. Will this fit under my hood without any problems? I can get this new crate engine for $3,569.00. Is this a good price? This is from
Burt Greenwald Performance Parts. Thanks for your help. :flag

It'll fit without a problem. I just put one in my 69, I got mine a little cheaper from a place in Florida, but shipping to you might cancel out much difference. I really like the motor, it is a brand new, modern roller-camed aluminum headed motor complete with HEI, aluminum intake and 153 tooth flexplate.
The long water pump it comes with will not work with your car, if you have an automatic you'll have to probably get a different torque convertor that will bolt up to it (I got a B&M Holeshot) if you have a manual, you'll have to get a flywheel that will work with the one piece rear seal.
Everything else will work fine.

I chose to put the Fastburn version of this engine in my car. I ordered it with the Hotcam kit which will push the engine to 430+hp. Not too sure what it will do to the torgue, if anything. I'll know more when I dyno test it. The engine alone cost me 5 grand but anticipate spending more.

Other things to consider.....

It does not come with a carb. It was recommended by several rodders to run it with a 750cfm Speed Demon. They all said it would the closest thing to fuel injection you'll get without it being fuel injected - hey its worth a try. $400 -$500

It comes equipped with an HEI distributor, so unless your vette is 1975/1976 or newer you cannot use the stock tachometer. I already had an MSD tach driven distributor. $150 - $200

It comes equipped with a long water pump. My vette used the the short pump. $75 - $100

It comes with a automatic trans flywheel. So if your running a manual trans you'll need to change the flywheel. $150 - $250

One thing I liked about this motor was the lower compression ratio (just in case I want to add a supercharger) and the aluminum heads. All of my work is taking place right now and it should be done by the end of the week. I am expecting the car to fly. I 'll let you know :auto:

One other thing to look for is will the intake clear the hood of an '80. Apparently it will on a 69 and a 71, as stated above, but believe that clearances are tighter on the later C3s.

I am running a ZZ4 in my 79 l82. The hood fit may affect your carb selection. I have a holley 750 which fits but is a little tall.

I installed ZZ4 in my 79 L82. I used the Speed Demon 650 carb, they make Demon carbs specifically for the ZZ4. I also used a K&N air filter, 2 7/8 inches thick and have had no hood clearance problems. Also installed new short leg water pump, but had to make minor modifications to allow clearance of the water pump with the new design timing cover. Installed 168 tooth flywheel (used same starter) for manual trans, hays street clutch. Also installed a new 4 row radiator, and true dual (2.5 inch) from MAD. Hope this helps. :seeya

The reason for the short water pump is what to tight to the rad? Is the distribitor they send set up for tach driven? Ray

That seems to be my biggest concern right there. I don't want to change hoods. The rise on the intake would make the difference. Ray

The money being spent never seems to quit. We had the rear end pulled and gone through last spring along with new trailing arms, fiberglass spring. wheel bearings and everything new on the steering from steering wheel, gear box, cylinder, pump, control valve, sway bar, hose, rad, tires, schocks. Now I will change the engine and then to the paint store. It makes those new one's price look good. Ray

You need short water pump so all the other pulleys line up. GM makes a water pump just for corvette applications. New pump was around $70. Hood clearance was not an issue, using manifold supplied with ZZ4.

one more thing.....on the 79, the water temp sensor was too large for the same 'port' in the head on the zz4. moved sensor up to intake manifold. That presented a new clearance issue with upper rad hose. What I did was I had the thermostat housing water outlet cut and rotated the neck about 90 degrees and welded in that position. Solved that problem, and hose fit fine.

That was a lot of help. I saved that and will go back to it when I need it. Thanks. Ray
