Default Paint color/code

Is there a way to determine the original paint color/code on a 1968 corvette. The tank sticker is long gone. I believe it was red. The original interior was red if that helps.
thanks,
rob

The trim tag in the inside of the driver door jam should indicate the original interior interior/exterior colors...that is if someone didn't switch it out at some point in its life. If the interior is red, then the code should either be 407 for vinyl or 408 for leather seats. Let us know the exterior trim # and we can let you know what color it should be.

No problem. If the exterior was red, you should find code 974 - (Rally Red) on the trim tag.
The other exterior color combinations with a red interior is 900 - Tuxedo Black or 972 - Polar White.
Hope this helps some!

I had a chance to check the trim tag. It makes no sense for this car.
the tag has

Chevrolet C17
Trim 425
Paint 992

i know this car had an original red interior and am pretty sure the exterior was red. This tag indicates dark orange interior and paint of corvette bronze.
have people found the tags being changed for some reason?
thanks

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the C17 Date = October 17, 1968. As for the 425 Interior code, I did a quick search here on the forum and Google. Although called Dark Orange Vinyl, it does kind of look Red to me. As for the 992 Exterior Paint Code, it does come back to Corvette Bronze. So either this is the way your Corvette was actually built or possibly that someone at some point changed out that Trim tag (but why)? But then...none of this makes sense if you are certain that it was originally Red on Red. Wish I could help more, but not really sure what to make of it from what you believe it to have been vs. what the trim tag is currently showing. Maybe others will chime in and offer their opinions on this as well...

Trust your trim tag.
Countless Corvettes have been color changed to Red over the decades, just like many Saddle interiors were changed to Black, but nobody ever color changed a car inside and out and then replaced the trim tag with a paint/interior combination that didn't match.
When the car was repainted Red the original Dark Orange interior probably clashed pretty badly so it was changed as well. Too bad 'cause Red Corvettes are a dime a dozen but that '68 Bronze on Dark Orange is an outstanding combination today.

After really digging into the car (stripping the interior) I have found that the trim tag is correct. Thanks for the help guys. I really appreciate it.
