Default Rear compartment clean-up.

Rear compartment- Jack stowage.
Removed the jack and assorted hardware as there was a lot of surface rust. Cleaning the compartment not easy, and would like to clean and paint the brackets and interior of the compartment once cleaned?
1. Is it worth drilling out the rivets to remove the brackets for cleaning and painting?
2. is there a special paint for the interior of the compartment?

Any tips appreciated.

After washing with Dawn, then a 50/50 mix of Zep Calcium, lime and rust remover with a bit of scrubbing. Very pleased, no need to drill rivets out. Thanks for the tips!

I'd start by parking outside, pulling the plug, and trying to rinse out what's in there. Then use cleaners starting with the least aggressive. Get a set of detailing brushes to agitate. Try Optimum No Rinse, detail spray, automotive APC, or diluted Dawn (Dawn is a strong degreaser, so watch where it goes). You might also try iron decon, just test that it doesn't react with the compartment. Whatever you use, be sure to neutralize and/or rinse.

I'd be inclined to drill the rivets, but I haven't tried that on my own car yet.

I cleaned mine up recently as I put sound deadener everywhere. This is one of those places that only you will ever see. So how perfect it is is up to you. I would clean, clean clean, then use a spray on rust converter on the brackets. Any nice aerosol satin black paint should be fine.

Agreed, I want to clean it and paint if/as needed. Laughed at your comment about only me seeing it, wife said the same thing!

Looks good. But I would still spray some rust converter on those steel brackets for future protection.

Looks way better , you should have a flasher and a relay in there for your alarm .The flasher goes in the holder you removed in your first photo and relay goes in the two holes on the left side

Default Rear compartment clean-up

Ended up tearing all the carpet and insulation out as there was quite a bit of rust in some areas and decided to install sound and thermal barrier throughout.
There are two brackets (circled in RED) on the rear panel that don’t appear to do anything, anyone know what they are?

Any tips on things to check before installing barriers and carpets appreciated, first go round for me.

You didn't say what year you have but that bracket looks like the one for the drop down tray for the rear window. They used that for years 68 to 72. Just my thought.

1970 LT-1 so I think you nailed it. T-top, the rear window does come out, never knew there was a storage tray or how it works. Thanks!

Rear compartment after install of dynamax sound barrier. Going to try and finish this area before doing the cockpit. Plan is to reinstall original underlayment and carpet as it cleaned up really well.
