My guess was aluminum strut rods or slightly different defferential mounts.

Ahh, now I see, a slightly different casing, I think I remember a post about this a while back. The difference between a dana 44 in a C3 and a C4.

71.454,4spd, you are the winner of the contest. Yes it is the Aluminum Strut Rods.

I've been told they never made the Aluminum Strut Rods, wanna buy some?

This rear is off of a late '82 Corvette with 17,000 miles that met it's fate in 1983. I have had it stored since then. These also known as the '82X cars. It was almost an '83...............Jim

Wow, that is really unique. I thought the C-4's used aluminum strut rods. They really should publicize these X 82's I have never heard of them and think that is really neat that they produced them to "pacify" waiting vette customers.

I think the actual case of that dana is different from the one on my 80.

One of the Alum. Struts on this unit is bent :cry but it is still a conversation piece. I took the casting numbers off of it and crossed the part numbers and it was superceded by the standard steel strut rod that preceded it, Ain't that something.

I noticed the case was a little different, but didn't realize it was different from a standard '82 as I did not compare it to one of them. I only had my '80 to campare too also.

I meantioned this set of Aluminum Struts last year on the Forum and was quickly told that they were never made and that I was mistaken. I posted this picture then and never recieved another reply to the post :D One thing I learned years ago about a Corvette.......don't ever say NEVER Jim

I just checked in ecklers and it appears that all C-4's used the aluminum strut rods. (84-96) I bet they are the same as your 82.

I already checked that out. I wish in a way that they had been the same. I would have considered using them instead of buying the VBP Smart Struts.

If anyone has a set of '82 Spindle Yokes i would like to purchase a set. Thanks JIM

You could always go with a fancy set like these :D

And is it just my eyes or are the upper mounts on that unit broken?

LAst week there was an 82 collector on ebay that had those struts also, it was probably a late production number also wich leads me to beleive they used the c4 struts on the late cars. So everyone with a high prod. Number 82, check please. Oh yeah, any idea if it had the HD suspension with the steal leaf spring?? The collector had.

PROSOUTH are you saying these aren't the c4 struts??

Well Marck it's been almost 20 years since I bought this rear and I don't really remember it having a steel spring or not.

I want to think that I took the casting number or part number off of the strut and looked it up. It was superceded by the original '80 - '82 steel strud rod. I really wanted to find a replacement rod, never did.

One of these is bent a little. If anyone needs one I have these I will not be using.

I have not compared the OAl of them to an '84, but I did run the numbers and it didn't give the '84 as a replacement number. I can't believe the dimension is the same, and they are not adjustable.

I am going with the VBP Smart Struts on bottom and Bubba is cutting the Poly Struts down the 13 1/2" this week for the upper link. I'm getting them ready for the 6 Link to go in.

I will be taking the HD yokes out of this rear to go n my '80 so I can use the bigger joints.

C-3 the mounting Batwing is not broken, it does appear that way in the pic'.
The frame mounting ears were cut off to remove it from the frame. It was much easier to do that way and you never know you might need the ears too.

Just thought everyone would enjoy a little something odd to look at. JIM :seeya

Well, it ain't a C4 strut indeed, they're different.

As for the 82, all I can find are the normal round steel rods.

Can you take a closer pic of it? It looks like it's got a H profile beam, where the C4 one has a T or more like a V

I own an 82 Corvette which came with the FE7 (gymkhana) suspension. Production number is 6515 (02/22/1982).

As you can see in the following pics, I have the alu street rods...

I have a friend that is a retired GM Factory Rep. He was the one telling me back then that the General had several orders at the last minute and made some extra cars over what they had intended. He called tham X Cars. I have no documentation and speak only from his information. The extra cars are not uncommon for a body change year I am told.

The same thing happened in 1969 with the Camaro /Firebird. The body change didn't come out till '70 1/2. It seems that '69 Camaros were made from August '68 until I think November '69. Usually the year ends in July or August. I think the '69 Camaro was made for about 15 or 16 months.

The Aluminum Struts from this '82 were the only ones I had ever seen. I posted the picture above on the Forum last year and had no reponse. I am glad to hear that there are others out there. I really wish that one of mine wasn't bent.

The car I stripped was hit in the drivers side door pretty hard. It was a very late production Medium Blue'82. It was owned by a local guy who purchased it new in Febuary from the Dealer. He paid over list to get it when he bought it in '83.

There are a lot of things you will hear about Corvettes and some are true and some are not. Just have to wade thru to see.

In '82 the Collector Edition Corvette was ready to be released and you may remember seeing a picture of a whole bunch of '82CE's in a parking lot at BG. One of the reasons they were all sitting was that they were waiting on new door panels. It seems that there was a scorched place about the size of a dime from a machine that made the door panels right at the top rear corner of them.

GM had to rush production of replacement panels to be ready in time for release. I went with Chuck to BG to pick up a 100 sets of take out CE door panels. I had probably 10 sets that I bought at the time. I sold the last set of them this year to '82DUKMAN here on the Forum. Might get Chris to post a picture of the spot sometime. It wasn't to bad a spot but, at the price these cars were bringing, I would have wanted a perfect set.

Jim,

I'm not really interested in the struts since I'm probably not using the 82 IRS. Ken73 may be interested, he'll probably contact you.

As for the FE7 suspension, I asked on the crossfire forum and there's another guy over there w/ an FE7 equipped 82 and he too has those alu h-beam struts. They must be truly rare pieces. .. did we just discover something cool here or what :) :D

I knew for sure that they were not a common piece when I didn't get a reponse last year after posting the picture here on the Forum.

When Jenny was polishing the Batwing on her car I thought about these and how great they would look under a Corvette. Just think, with no spare a polished Batwing and polished Aluminum Struts shining underneath along with my polished Borlas and Exhaust Pipes............you'd have had to wear Sunglasses to follow it   Jim
