Default Four Speed Won't Shift

Well, I got my C3 LT1 w/air out for a drive and it rode and shifted great for a thirty-mile run! After pulling into my property, it would not shift! No reverse or shifting forward! Putting it in NEUTRAL, the car will go forward in first gear! When I put it in first gear or reverse the car won't move! It acts like when you accidently leave the emergency brake on and car won't move ! My mechanic says it probably is a lineage problem and he will look at it in two weeks as he is swamped right now . Anyone familiar with this situation ?

It's stuck in 1st gear. Before you do anything else, check that the shift linkages are attached properly. I think there's a bad failure mode when you are in 1st and 3rd at the same time, which would be really bad.

If you can jack up the car and get under it safely, you may be able to fix the problem yourself. Or at least take some photos such that we can help better.

If you can get under it and disconnect the linkage from the tranny, you should be able to move the arms with an adjustable wrench on the arm, not the nut. Note if any bushings are missing from the arms where the linkage goes in before you take it apart. Take pics of everything as you go.

and whatever you do, do not let the clutch out in anything but 1st gear. you can snap teeth putting power to it when it is in 2 gears at the same time. best to jack it up and see what is wrong where it is.

Please take some photos when he gets it on the lift! We all learn when questions like this get resolved. You may help dozens of folks who never even post on the Forum.

You shouldn't be able to put a Muncie or BW in two gears at once

its in two gears, you need linkage adjustment or a clip came off, easy fix on a lift

If the linkage is messed up it could be in reverse and a forward gear at the same time that is why it will not move.

My 66' with a stock shifter would cross linkage arms and get stuck in third often with a heavy hand powershifting......a quick pop of the 3-4 ear wit a pair of channel locks would set it free in a few seconds.....i bet that is what is happening here.

If you are using the stock Muncie divorced shifter mount, the shifter can jam and feel like it's in two gears at once. On my 68, the lower bolt became lose and jammed up the shifter linkage. Best to jack up the car and inspect the linkage. Jerry
