I had that problem on my '71 when I ran a HEI. I had the electric fans set to stay off until coolant got to 210F. The stagnant air in the engine compartment made the ignition module overheat.

I now have the fans running at half speed whenever the engine is on and go full speed at 210F so that there's always air moving. That fixed it with the HEI. Since then I also switched to a Holley dual sync distributor and it has also worked fine.
