Grinding Noise in steering column when steering
In my '75, I've noticed a grinding noise coming from my steering column whenever I steer (left or right...it doesn't matter). It's a smooth grinding noise...no clanks or clunks...just grinding.
I checked the steering column locking pin, thinking it may not complete retract, when I start the engine and it would be rubbing against the steering wheel....but it retracts like it's suppose to.
The steering works perfectly, it tracks straight and true on the interstate, and there's not wobble (at any speeds) in the steering wheel....just that grinding noise.... HELP!!!
UPDATE * UPDATE * UPDATE IT WAS THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN BEARING! SO GLAD...EASIER TO CHANGE

It could be as simple as the cover-shroud below the steering wheel is rubbing on the cover that is below the first cover (the first cover-shroud rotates with the steering wheel...it's easy to check without disassembling anything)
Let us know what you discover.

Could be the upper or lower bearing...
This column was "working" perfectly too!!! Probably would have eventually stopped making noise.

I'm thinking bearings as well. I would unhook the rag joint and spin the wheel, pull up and down on it. and try to determine where the grinding is coming from.

Take a look at the horn contact wipers. I’ll bet they are worn and galled, and that is what is causing your grinding noise.
