Default Seatbelts Design Flaw???

As many of you know I am getting ready to begin the complete restomod of my 73 Coupe.
The 73 Coupe shoulder belts go through the upper corners of the seats and with my old original belts and retractors, they seldom pull out smooth.
They latch mid way so I have to let them retract several times and pull them again at different angles before they will pull out fully to connect.
If I disconnect the lap and shoulder belts and connect them one at a time I still have some issues but they work much better.
My plan has been to remove the original belts and send them to SnakeOyl to be rebuilt and restored rather than buying reproduction belts.
My question is; Is the issue I’m having with the belts pulling out and connecting together a design flaw of the original belts and will they function together and smoothly once they are restored and rebuilt?
Thanks!

Hey Greg-

I can't answer your question -but something to think about-

The design of those belts are what 50 years old?

You are running a roll-bar ( if it ever showed up?!!!) I don't think you are going the NCRS route-
Why not incorporate a much better seat belt system using the roll bar?

Food for thought...

Richard

Hey Richard,
That thought has been on the back of my mind.
I thought about going with a newer style belt system that will bolt to the roll bar, it did finally show up, or going to a newer style belt system from a later model C3.
My #1 choice is the oem 73 belts because they are clean and I like the way they feed through the seat.
I just don’t want to spend $$$.$$ and still have the same issue as I do now.

My 78 OEM seatbelts are a giant PIA!!!!

They do the exact same behavior as yours, locking when being pulled to latch, locking when leaning forward when latched, constant repulling to release the latch, etc AND ALWAYS have since day one new...design flaw absolutely...........

Do the 78 belts still go through the seats or are they the one piece type that go around the side?

I am considering going to Simpson Restraints just so I don’t have the constant connection issues.
This is my least favorite option because I don’t really like the way the look hanging over the seats and they are really overkill.
I hope others will post their experiences with the oem style belts so I can make a better decision.
