Default Shopping For New Tires

I need to replace the 18 year old BFG Radial TAs on my 73 and I am considering Cooper Cobra Radial GTs or General Grabber HTS. Tire size is 225/70/15. Would like to hear from any of the forum members who have experience with either of these brands. One of the old TAs is experiencing belt separation and considering the age of the tires it time to replace them.

I have BFG 245-60-15’s with the stock rally wheels on my 73.
They fit and ride very nice.
The front tires just kiss the frame when the steering is at full lock but the front end was slightly lowered by the prior owner so you may not see any interference if you are at stock ride height.
There have been some threads about the white letters turning brown on the BFG’s over the past few years but I haven’t had any problems with mine.
Mine are 6 years old and I won’t drive with them on the highway anymore.
I am going to upgrade to 17’s as part of my restomod.
Everyone who has will tell you the improvements in ride and handling with 17” or 18” is worth the upgrade and new wheels.

If you are happy with the performance and handling of the T/As, I’d stick with them.

Be very careful if changing tire size as even the slightest difference on diameter will affect your speedometer.

Read the sticky at the top of this forum on tires.

OCB....I have noticed that some new tires are slightly out-of-round...sometimes as much as 1/4"....which causes tires to need re-balancing more often than usual....and can cause body vibration around 60 mph that can be hard to "cure".
(Just throwing that in the mix)

I just put the Cooper Cobra Radial GTs on my 75, white lettered, staggered sizes ft/r. They replaced my Hercules HP 4000 tires i had on it.
The Coopers are a nice tire and ride pretty good.

Been running Cooper Cobras for many years. I've had good luck with them.

Put me in the Cooper Cobra group, as well. Nice riding tire with low noise and nice handling. Cannot speak to wet or icy conditions though since I live in southern Arizona.

Hi gr8t73, not bashing at all, as I used to do the same thing and keep tires too long. Luckily it was a trailer tire on a dual axle trailer that taught me my lesson after doing a bit of research to verify what the tire shop told me. The time to replace your TAs was 8-10 years ago - unless your car wasn't being used.

I think I'm going to try the Vitour Galaxy tires next time. They are a "V" rated tire that is made in our tire sizes. They have excellent reviews but the raised white letter spacing is odd.

I've been running the BFG's for almost 40 years so i can't compare them to other brands. i've had no problems with them. i put a new set on the car last summer and have about 2000 miles on them and the letters are still white.

I just installed a new set of Cooper 255 60 15 on my white L82 , I like them a lot , ride nice good traction , I was surprised how good the Coopers hooked at the local track a couple months ago on my black L82 . the balance didn't take much weight to balance , happy happy

That's why you have a shop install them that can road force balance them. That way you get the out of round junk handled before you even drive it.

I bought my Cooper Cobras about 6 months ago.
235 70 15R in the front and 255 60 15R in the rear.

No real complaints regarding the BFGs just ready to try a different brand tire. I am sticking with the original tire size so should be no issues regarding speedometer accuracy

I was told by the largest manufacture of tires if the side walls are not crack keep trucking! Age has no affect it is the side walls cracking like most of the Michelins i have purchased in the past. Not much rubber trees left on this earth and every one is using cheap reproductions of rubber.
