Okay, what was the first car that you can remember that you either went for a white knuckle ride in and left you breathless or layed in bed at night as a kid and had heart pounding dreams about driving? My first ride that got me hooked was a 70 Ram Air III Trans Am.

When I was a kid I use to pump my Mom's gas (back when I thought it was fun). A Red 71/72 conv. parked next to me with a white interior. I was looking at it and the driver said, "Do you like the car? It is a Corvette".

Well, I was pretty close to ya with a 1967 Formula Firebird 400 4sp, 335hp no ram air though. That car could fly.
Then came a 1976 455 TA, followed by a mellow 1982 Firebird TA. Then in 1987 came a rip-snortn' Z-28 350ci. Never liked all the pollution crap on the 1976+ era's. That's why I settled on a 1970 Vette.

Re: What was the first car that got you hooked on this thing we do? (72vetteman)
GOSH! When I was 14-15 my cousin had two camaros. 375HP 396 with a turbo 400, and a DZ-302 with of course, a 4-speed. I was building a motor for my '57 at 15 (when I got my permit) and by the time I had my license, I had the motor in. 283 bored .060 to 292 and it had 11.5 pistons. I put a Muncie 4-speed in it, and got a 4:56 pumpkin for it. I built with solid lifters, and my cousin coached me all the way. I used to shift at 8500 RPM.
Only mistake was using Chrome MOly rings. I had to wait 2,000 MI to really get on it!! My first win was against a '63 Belair 2-door HT with a 327/Powerslide. I still had the three-speed at the time... We marked off 1320 on a local street and kicked is butt.
I was hooked.
Now, here's the story about the '69 Camaro: Cuz gave me the keys while he was outta town for a week  and it was OK for me 'cuz the engine was out of the '57 that week (remember how easy that used to be???)
I remember gettin' on it hard! and the throttle stuck!! I had the sense to shut the key off and it was only by the grace of God that I didn't hit the wall into our condo's at the time.... I just turned the key off one notch, and the steering wheel didn't lock!! :blueangel: :blueangel:  :yesnod:
Next summer, I was rebuilding the front end of the '57 and he loaned me the other camaro (BB/Turbo 400) to drive for a coupla days. I was fresh out of High School and was driving through the "school strip" like I had been doing while attending there. I got a lot of attention 'cause they all remembered my '57. Anyway, after a whole day of driving the **crap** out of that 375HP 396, I settled down. I was putt-putting out of the school when it sucked a valve. Of course I had to pull the head and fix the prob.
That was the last time I hot-rodded a big block. :mad

from as far back as i can remember. 68 camaro. My moms highschool car turned into a street monster for my older brother. I remember when we first started restoring it (i was 3? 4?) and my dad had me w/ a palm sander attacking the primer on the car looking for low/high spots :)

It was in 1953 or 54, in the small town of Bald **** Arkansas. Our town doctor made house calls in his new Corvette. I suppose I wasn't happy to have a family member get sick ----- But, I sure loved to see that Corvete come to the house. I waited out in front, watching for him to arrivae and stayed with the car, just looking and walking circles around it, until he left.

Re: What was the first car that got you hooked on this thing we do? (72vetteman)
My dad loved cars, but since he had a family to raise he didn't have extra money to get into hotrods like some of us do. So, my mom inherited his needs for horsepower with the family cars he bought her. To this day I think she is clueless about why he bought a '66 Chevy station wagon with a 396... a '68 Caprice with a 427... a '71 Grand Prix with a 455... it would have probably gone on if he had not passed away early in life.
My first real opportunity of being in a powerful car was a '69 Shelby 500 back in the mid 70's that I leaned sideways under the roll bar in the back seat. That was something else when my friend stomped it. Banged my head on the roll bar as far as I remember.
By the way... my first car was a '65 Ponitac 2+2 with a 421 in it & reverberated radio that I bought for $350. For some humor... one weekend I peeled out at a stop light and broked the windshield of an off-duty cop's Grand Prix with rocks that were on the road. He took after me and we had quite a chase going for awhile. That 2+2 was heavier than hell when I took corners, but I'd leave him when we got on straightaways. Unforetunately, I ran out of gas and he called my dad. My dad came out & gave him information to get the windshield fixed and the guy left. I figured I was in all kinds of trouble, but my dad only said "Why didn't you out run him?" He didn't know I ran out of gas. Figured I just stopped. That was back in '73.

In 1964 my brother drove in the driveway with a white fuel injected '57 Vette. The looks of that car, and the cool hissing sound of that fuellie unit on that 283, and it was all over for me at 9 years old. He's lucky I didn't wet my pants when he took me for a ride!

In high school, I drove an '73 Cougar with a modified 351C. I loved that car!
I sold it to a good friend after graduation, and he promptly totalled it. What a tragedy...

Mine was a Pontiac too. I got back from basic training in the Army in 1967 and my buddy gave me a ride in his 1964 GTO. He floored it from a standing stop and I grabbed on to the sides of the seat hanging on for dear life. It was like being shot out of a cannon. My 1998 C5 exceeds that feeling and my '72 should be even better.

Actually mine was really young. Bro is ten years older than me... and when he was 18 went to college. somehow he drove a 53 ... and that was in the early sixties. When he went to the Air Force we kept the car in the garage 'til he went overseas. But I remember him always having girls around!

My father was fighter pilot so we had just returned from Europe in the fall of '67 and were staying with family in Erlanger, KY during the transition.
My older girl cousin had just bought a dark green '67 427/435hp four speed coupe with side pipes.
She took me for many rides...I was 12 years old...need I say more :D :D

I guess if your are refering to working on cars then it was my first car, a 1973 MGB. I got it when I turned 16 and had to learn to work on it to keep it running. It was a fun car though. If you are refering to when my obsession with Corvettes started the It would have to be a Christmas in the early 70's when I got a toy car hauler truck and the 3 cars on it were a 1963 Split Window, a C2 of some year I cant remember which year though and a 1969 Convertible with side pipes. I have and always will think the 1963 Split Window is my favorite year. I bought my shark because the C3 body style is one of the most outragous designs ever and I love the interior.
