Default 73 turn signal stalk button - what was it possibly for?

Good evening all,

I am in the process of dying the column on my 73. I am replacing the lever for the turn signal and when I tried to remove the original I found it had a wire connected to it. It has a button on the end that is far as I can tell is not a two position button you just push the button and it must close a switch inside of it. I am pretty certain it is not original but what could this have been used for? Was it a common modification in these cars? See the attached pictures for the connector that comes out of the column for it.

Scott

That seems most likely now that you mention it.

Judging from the connector this was certainly aftermarket.

Cruise control wasn't available in C3's until 1977 or 1978. A prior owner installed cruise (or was thinking about it and actually got the lever/switch installed. Even if the car does not have the other cruise equipment, put that lever/switch back in when you reassemble. You can add cruise later and use that switch to engage it.

(Note: that is an early switch that does NOT have on/off or RESUME buttons also. You can use it to engage a cruise system that is always turned ON. A full-feature turn/cruise lever would be better.)
