Default How Do You Feel About Cutting The Dash To Install An AfterMarket Radio?

I bought a nice radio on ebay a few months ago because my 72 radio works very poorly. Lots of static! Songs are bearly understandable and that is a stretch.

I am having trouble coming to terms with cutting the dash even though the new radio will cover the cut and fullfill my desire for music. It even has a CD.

So, what to do?

Take a look at some installations that others have completed using the American International FP-306 part. I used it on my car and the CD player looks like it belongs there.

Although I can barely hear the radio above the exhaust, I still enjoy it.

I say cut it! Unless it is a rare or high-value vette, cut it, enjoy your tunes, and don't look back! Repo bezels are readily available for about $100 if you ever want to return it to stock.

Who needs a radio when you can listen to the Duntov Symphony?

That bezel is not terribly expensive. I keep a spare if I ever get the notion to go back to stock. For the moment, I enjoy today's sound/audio technology.

Buy the bezel first. Then cut away.

I just spent $120 to go back to an uncut bezel... Don't cut it. You can get already cut ones for $15-$20 anywhere... Found tons of em at Carlisle.

I have a Collector's Edition, so the center console might be worth something to somone (a sligthly different color than stock). I baught a new one and cut it up and saved my old one. Probably sell it now because my car is nowhere close to stock anymore. I didn't trust myself cutting it so I took it to a local installer (rice palace :D ) and had them cut it for me for $5.

If you do cut it, you might want to check out this slick kit to make it look stock. http://www.vettespecialties.com/simp...CategoryID=141

You can buy the modification kit and use it with your cut bezel.

I used a dremmel tool with a cutoff wheel and cut mine in place. Remember to measure twice before cutting. There is no turning back once you start.

I feel great about having a cut dash for an aftermarket indash deck, BUT.....then the 2 front speakers, then the 2 12"subs, then the amps, then the rear speakers

If the one you have now is cot cut or broken or scratched to hell,
then buy one that has already been modified - like Chris said.
You'll find one on Ebay if you look for a while. :seeya

I think it's really up too you. It seems like must people lean toward cutting the dash, but I don't. I think if done right, so that it looks like the radio belongs there then it's not a bad thing. Most of the pictures posted were of newer C3's not a 72, which is much harder to customize in my opinion. I cut the dash when I first bought my 70 so that I could install an Alpine CD Player. It never really looked good even though the sounds was awsome. After I starting replacing the interior piece by piece it really stood out like a sore thumb so I spent the money to buy a new bezel and a Custom Tunes deck that would fit the stock opening. It has a tape deck and CD changer controls so I am not given up and sound, and it looks great. Good Luck with what ever you decide :)

DO NOT CUT THE ORIGINAL BEZEL....buy a repop and cut the repop, or look for one already cut

I agree - I cut mine years ago - shaved only about 1/8" on each side. But if I had the chance to rethink, I would buy one already cut. That being said, I will widen mine when I get a new hi-tech stereo in the spring.
