Black wire to horn relay has constant ground (but shouldn't.) Any ideas?
My 1970's horn doesn't work. Instead of only having ground only with the horn button pressed, the black wire to the horn relay has constant ground. I removed the horn contacts and even the spring -- as well as removed the black wire from the relay.
Anyone have this problem in the past? Doesn't the black wire go direct from the horn relay into the multipin connector at the steering column?
Any ideas would be spectacular!
Thanks,
Sam

Hi sam,
The BLACK wire may be shorted inside the steering column.
Disconnect the BLACK wire a 'G' at the harmonica connection and with the horn button and the spring and plunger disconnected
test the BLACK wire. If it's still grounded you have found the problem.

This part disintegrates with age. It's both a retainer for the snap ring and an insulator in ground circuit for the horn. When broken the wire will have constant ground. You don't have to go very deep into the column to replace it but there's still enough pieces that you should lay them out in the order you remove them.
