Where to get copy of GM car key?

I buy new keys from my dealer. I show him a copy of my title and driver's license and it's about $10. As long as the ignition switch hasn't been swapped, you're golden.

I had a local pro locksmith make me some for my 71 ... he made GM keys from the vin ... Seems like they were about $25/2 ... like new again!
He scolded me for having a heavy keychain ... said that dangling weight wears out keys & locks.

I bought blanks from Zip (the letters matter, there are 4 different ignition keys and 4 different lock keys in a rotation in that period).
I brought them to a local locksmith who thought they were pretty cool and did it for free (!). I tipped him what it would have cost me at Home Depot, only these keys actually worked.

I was told the same about the heavy keychains ruining the locks and ignitions.

The story about "heavy keychains" was a public service announcement put out by GM and maybe some others. Damage to the IGN lock could and did happen, but most of those repair cases first appeared around 2007. The key had a sophisticated security code inside to match the lock. Very pricey if replacement was needed.
It was never an issue back when the IGN switch was built stronger, less high-tech. Our 1970s steering column IGN switch has had hundreds of thousands of rotations with your favorite little, one of a kind, keychain dangling, without issue. God Bless low tech.

Apologies to Surfer69. I need to add my two cents worth.
First time I bought a used car with a key Fob, I asked the dealer where the spare key fob is. Glove box? Your desk drawer?
There isn't, replied the dealer.
Can you get me one, says I.
No, not from us, they are over $100, says he. Has to be programed.
Never did get a spare. And when the fob battery croaks, has to be programed again.
Spare key for my '77: under a dollar.

$160 from the dealership.
$75 for new OEM on eBay. Then wanted a spare and found $10 for old OEM guts in a new aftermarket case on eBay.
Programmed myself in 2 minutes.
As for getting keys cut
Hardware store cut keys did not work.
Professional locksmith said they had to cut them in opposite direction or something like that to get the profile to work. Those work.
