Could the 23 be a type-o and supposed to be a 13? There was no 23 paint code for 78, and only Anniversary Ed. or Pace car 2-tone right? So is it originally a 2-tone Ann. Ed. with a mistake on the tag? This is not a high priced car and is now painted black. Just curious if this has been seen before....

You might want to contact someone at the NCRS site for this code info.

Have to agree with eod...it should have been a 13U to compliment the 07U. Wasn't caught...not a big deal back then. But car looks repainted with black or dark blue, it has a dark blue cloth interior. Look for signs of overspray on the chassis can confirm the repaint. Also, you have the buildsheet it will show the correct paint and trim codes.

How many miles? Can you get a photo of the entire tag including the build date? I'm an instructor at the NCRS judging retreat and we like to include these production anomalies to show...there are no absolutes!

Here is a pic of the trim tag on a 78 Silver Anniv paint job for comparison, build date May 5th. (I05). Looked at another silver anniv paint car and it shows a 13 instead of 23 for a May 18th build. You have a May 30th pictured? I30?

I believe that 'U' means Upper Body (paint)

I can just see the guy that made the tag saying "oops. Hey fellas I invented a new paint code.....Next. "

It is date code I30 for May 30th and the VIN falls in the correct sequence batch. It has been repainted black. It's an L82 4spd, I'll be picking it up tomorrow and post some pics.

Good luck and have some fun with the car. Hard to go wrong with a L82 4spd

Did you check the c3 registry to see if it is listed. Sometimes there will be some added information on the car.

Default Update

Sent off for the invoice and got a reply that it was not available because it was an export vehicle?? Guess I'll hope and try to find a build sheet....

Interesting! May well explain the mismatched paint code. Guessing it was an export to Canada. I’m not familiar with this year specifically but there were instances where different colors were offered in Canada for a specific year.

Excellent L-82 4 speeds are terrific C3's, as good as it gets with the SBC's ...X2 if it has the sport/gymkhana suspension...look for a 7/16 inch rear sway bar in the rear wheel well for sport suspension confirmation! front bar will be 1 1/8 inch with the sport suspension as well

According to the master GM RPO code list 23U is a paint code.
23U : PRIMARY COLOR, EXTERIOR, MED MAUI BLUE MET (91)
Along withe 07M the car would have a blue over silver which I've seen on Camaro's and Firebird's.

According to the NCRS judging guide there were special order for paint colors other than those standard corvette colors.

Otherwise I would say it was a typo.

Thanks CA.
Being as Canada only got about 10% of the Corvettes made in any particular year, this could, potentially make for some very rare (and interesting) cars.

The pics below are from the NCRS Judging Guide ver3 for 78-79 with regards to exterior paint. You were able to order a color other than a corvette color. Even order one with primer paint only. With your interior color (29C) would be Dark Blue Cloth your trim tag would make sense. I would say you have a rare car since very few special orders were made according to NCRS.

Does anyone know of a way to get any information similar to the invoice? Did Canada cars get records sent somewhere? I'll be on the lookout for a build sheet but not really going to take the car apart right now. Just finished compounding, polishing and waxing it. It's a driver quality paint job but a great 10 footer. Will get better as I touch up several chips also. I've driven it to work the last couple of days and it runs great... shifter is a little sloppy in neutral but I'll correct that eventually. Pic is from Wednesday....

The only thing you can get for your 78 is the dealer invoice. My understanding was that most of the build sheet records were lost in a fire some years ago. The only other place to look would be the tank sticker if it is still there. I ordered the vehicle invoice for my 78 which listed the options along with the color much like a build sheet. Worth the $50 it cost me.
