Default K&N Air Filter-I Bought One

I do not know why...but I thought I would try one. Love to experiment I guess. They do seem to be highly regarded for air flow and filtering capability. Part # is E-1500. Here is quality control checking out the goods.

There are pretty serious claims/hype associated with this product! I will let you know my impressions in a day or so. (BTW, in Canada they are available at Canadian Tire.)

Paul,

What's the height of this filter? I was wondering if there's one that would fit under my 74's hood, with stock air cleaner...

Thanks,
-Pedro

It appears from the link below that your 1974 takes the same filter as my 1979: E-1500. The height is 3 7/16" and the outside diameter is 12".

Default K&N Air Filter-I Bought One

Great...please let us know if you find a big difference. Some people say it's not noticeable and other says it is. Also...people say you get a 15% HP gain from these. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think.

15% is a lot. I'd say 5 hp.

I have K & N 's on Vette, the Datsun (a cone on a cold air induction system), the Suburban and the 36' Motorhome with a Ford V-10. The only one that I noticed any real difference and saw increased gas milage, was the motorhome. But at 20,000 pounds that thing needs to suck a lot of air going up a hill. But on the other cars, it can't hurt and may help.

Sure, they flow more air. Lots more air. Lots more air and lots more dirt. Those filters are something like only 80% effecient. The Kralinator/AC we sold at work were in the mid 90's, possibly higher. Even Frams are more effecient. Funny what they don't let you know.

Thanks, Paul! 3 7/16" does seem a bit too high, though... I'll have to make some measurements before I buy it...

I have one too. But I noticed the top of the air cleaner unit doesn't quite seal against the bottom with one of these installed. Doesn't seem to affect anything though... :smash:

I have heard that they flow more air and also more dirt as well. IMO, not worth such a minimal gain in hp. Interestingly, I have read threads on other forums where there has actually been a very slight drop in hp with before and after dynos but slightly improved gas mileage. I have heard some really good things about AMSOIL air filters.

I'm mixed with them. I have a cone-type K&N filter on my Eclipse, a regular FRAM on the Vette, and a K&N panel filter on the wife's Land Rover. In the case of the Eclipse it was a noticeable difference (but it was a bigger element than stock). The Land Rover was absolutely no difference except in cost. It was way more expensive to buy replacement LR filters every so often than to just clean and reuse the K&N. For the Vette I just check the air filter regularly and replace as needed.

Would be very curious to hear your findings, though, Paul. When I change out my carb, I plan on getting a chrome air cleaner and at that time, I may be swayed to spend some extra $ if it gives any perf. advantage.

thanks for the post (as always)

At least you only have to buy one. My '82 takes two. I have thought about getting K&N filters too, but I always wondered what "magic" they used to get all that air flow. Do they sacrifice filtering for air flow????

Pedro,

I have the 3 7/16" one on my 74 L48, BUT I have an Edelbrock Performer 2101 intake, got the filter when I got the intake. Really don't know if the Edelbrock is shorter than a foatory intake. With the filter in place there is approx 3/8" left showing on the stud, plenty of room for the wing nut.

I bought one for my cadillac and noticed quicker throttle response and 1.5 mpg better gas milege. I also put one on my 77 but don't know if it helped because I put it in as soon as I got the car so I have no comparison.

Thanks, Dick! I have the very same set-up (Performer 2101; 1/4" higher than stock), so I think I'll go with the tall filter!

Made it out this morning despite 36F temps. But the sun was shining....Did some city/highway driving; brisk acceleration runs at varying speeds. It was the type of morning that you feel great about. The car ran marvellously (and you made it home without tickets).

In any case, I am convinced that there is some substance in the K&N hype. Not earth-shattering, of course, it is just an air filter. But something is different. Acceleration is a bit quicker and for the lack of a better word, somewhat smoother. One could argue that it is the cooler temperature I suppose. Nevertheless in my subjective opinion, and knowing my car very well, the claim of K&N that there is a modest HP increase is valid. Whether that justifies the extra cost is each person's decision to make.

Might be your filter but the cold temp is def aiding in the added power. Is this by far the coldest day you have driven it? Cold air=more power. :yesnod:
