Default 1974 L82 Corvette Orange/neutral interior 70,000 miles Need Info and Value

I had someone look at the car
Here goes
77,000 miles
Engine strong
Trans 4 speed and shifts well
NO frame rot!!!!!
Just some surface rust on frame
Paint good, but front and rear bumpers have slight spidering
Interior clean, and the carpets are clean
BUT the interior door panels have some cracks
The back up Light stay on all the time, and need to be fixed
Clock does not work, all other gauges work
Tires and wheels are good
Drives good, no leaks
They are asking 11,500
Good or Bad

Sounds alittle high, but overall the car sounds nice. If you like it, see if you can work something out with the owner :) .

A bit high ... I don't think I'd go over 9,000.

$9,000 tops! Add a few bucks if it has the gymkhana suspension or convertible.

That is a little on the high side for a '74 that needs work. '74-'77s are'nt bringing that kinda money when they need work. Price seems like it should be in the $7,500-$9,000 range.

I agree. That car is about 2000 overpriced. Unless it makes your heart stop, it isn't worth over 8-9k tops. The color combo does sound really sharp though. Do you have any pictures showing the exterior and interior? I wonder how the neutral color looks with orange.

I have purchased two Vettes in the last month, and was looking at another today, and here's what I can tell you:
The Vette market is VERY SOFT right now.

My last two purchases: a #s match 1973 454 Coupe for $8K in extremely nice condition and a '69 Convertible that started life as a 427/435 (still has a built 454) which is in need of a paint job, but nice interior and two tops for $6K. That should tell you just about what you should be paying for a '74 Coupe...

There are a ton of Vettes (and other cars) on the market, so unless you absolutely need one today, make a very low offer and wait the seller out. On my 1969, when I called, seller was asking $14,500, the second time I talked to him a few days later (since he'd had it on the market for some number of months) he was going to "fire sale" it at $10K. A few days later, I offered "$5750, but maybe I could go $6K," when I went down there to look at the car, and he told me "No way, not a penny under $9K." Two days later he called me back and said "$6K" So basically in one week, he went way under 50% of original asking price on a very desirable Vette.

So if it was me, I'd show the person the #4 book value of a '74, which $5500 and the #3 condition of $9000, and tell him "your car is really a number 4 (if it needs new interior panels and light fixes etc...)" and while your car might have sold 18 months ago closer to your asking price,(but not full asking) right now that's just out of the range of what cars in nicer shape are currently selling for. Offer $5,800, and say "maybe I could meet you a little higher" give him your business card and prepare to walk away.

He'll call when nobody else wants the car at that price, and you'll get a hell of a deal...like $6,200.

Just think of it this way: He has no problem asking for someone to buy the car at $2K more than its value, so you should feel confident to at least ask him to sell for $2K under value. Generally, you'll get it at, or a little below value.

If the guy is simply tied to the image of his car's value, walk away and find another one.

Sam

I think that's way too much.

I don't like the electrical issues, or the condition of the bumpers and the door panels. And orange can be a hard sell. You either like it, or you don't. I like it. But a lot of folks out there think "Pumpkin". Especially at this time of year.

I do like that it's an L-82 with a 4 speed and only 70K.

Still, I'd try for somewhere around $8000.

Great reply from Sammy B.

Market will be very soft due to uncertainty in market re whats going to possibly happen overseas..Lots of vettes out there now.

I would make a very low offer ($5-6K and walk away...) Does the seller want your money or not. :jester:

A good tip is to take out folding and wave it under his nose with a NOW... Yes or No.

Takes a hard man to turn down folding they can touch !! :yesnod:

That car sounds like it has exactly the same options as my car had from the factory. When I bought it though, the motor wasn't original, the color was changed to yellow, and it was in pretty bad condition throughout. I paid $4000 for it though.
