Default How to properly clean a carburetor

Hi there,

I bought carburetor cleaner spray in order to clean my 4160 holley carburetor.

Wondering how to properly do it.

Carburetor is installed on the car.

Thanks in advance.

Get a rebuild kit remove the carb soak the carb body in solvent blow out the passages replace parts that came in the kit. put it back together and enjoy. Holleys are simple to rebuild.

Not really, is very generic.

As far as I know should be apply on the bowl vents with cold engine.

Wondering if once with engine running I could spray on the Choke's butterly.

To clean the outside, I would cover everything except the carb to keep the mess to a minimum and to keep it off any painted surfaces. Spray it on and sop up the run off. Maybe use a small paint brush to get into the nooks and crannies. Carb cleaner usually leaves a residue (why you don't use it on brakes), so you'll want to wipe everything down when you're done. A little spray on the choke butterfly should be ok. Spray and wipe. A LITTLE down the carb shouldn't hurt.

for now just buy a quality brand complete fuel system cleaner, add it to the gas tank-as per instructions- a bottle that does one treatment might cost 10 bucks. dont use the cheap stuff.for most of my cars i use lucas brand-complete fuel system cleaner- the bigger bottle lets you have enough stuff to do alot of treatments. you can always rebuild the carb. some other day. oh forget to drive it on the freeway to help it to blow out any grime build up.you will like -lucas fuel treatment-. i use it in my honda crv, the check engine light comes on every 6 months,,its the no. one fuel injector giving me problems,so i squirt some treatment in the tank ,,2 days later the check engine goes out and all is good. i know im masking the real problem,,but for now its ok hay, good luck tom

depends on your goal. if you want the carb to look clean on the outside, do as suggested, cover and spray. if your goal is to renew the carb, dissolve any deposits/gunk/varnish that are in the jets, float bowl, needle, etc. you will need to remove the carb and disassemble, and spray it all down and blow it out. re-assemble, then re adjust everything to spec. if you don't want to go that route, I usually tighten the mixture screws in while counting the turns it took then remove them, that way when you put it back together you can set the idle screws back to where they were originally....

the old instructions on the can that say spray into carb throat while revving engine doesn't do anything for the problem areas. you're better off running techron or lucas in the gas for a few tankful's if you don't want to tear the carb apart.

Stuff for cleaning the outside of your carb is for 'cosmetic' purposes, only. If you are having functional problems with the carb, it needs to be rebuilt.
