Default Market Value of this 1970 Coupe? Very Nice (pics).

Local car I saw last weekend at a Cruise Day. Very nice. And "FOR SALE." About 75,000 miles on the odometer. Base 300hp engine with TH400. What market value would you place on this car? The frame is clean and sound and much of the front and rear-end running gear is new, professionally done to specs. I have not checked numbers but it does come with the original Protec-o-Plate and bill of sale.

It looks clean, but I think more information would be helpful, it obivously has no air I noticed that it does have electric windows, what about P/S or P/B. How original is it? Is it in solid original shape? How's the frame? If everything is in really good shape, say 8 out of a possible 10, then I'd guess about $11k to $13k in todays rather depressed market. Remember that is a GUESS, I could be totally wrong (and probably am.)

You added some more pictures since I started my reply :D

Yes, I added some pics! It does take time to get them transferred from my hard drive to the Forum area. The frame is pristine and painted with what looks like POR-15. The owner is a Corvette person and knows his C3s. It is original down to the silly GM radio that never worked very well. Note the NCRS plate.

I'm seeing power brakes and lots of extra chrome under the hood. I'm guessing $13-17k depending on the engine's originality.

The car looks really good. I recently bought a 72 competely restored for $16.5. The market value was about $19.5.

The car you are looking at would seem to be in that range. BTW, I spend months studying these prices. :)

I'd say no more than $13k with a the base 350 and AT. IMO

You are very close to the asking price: about $13,000US. The owner apparently knows his prices also. But that is fair ball.

*Edit*-I thought the steel bumper cars were going at a premium this year. I guess the base engine, the chrome pieces and the automatic transmission cuts into the value.

It looks like it would take some engine bay work to get it to original condition. There's shouldn't be that much chrome. Is it a late car? Like after s/n 14,000? If not, then it should have the open air element, not the dual snorkel. Also the MC lid should be gold. The valve covers painted orange on base engine cars. Fan should be gloss black (it almost looks chromed in the pics). The other thing hard to see is the hoses and engine wiring. If the engine was pulled and all that stuff gone over it could take some work getting it back to factory original condition. What was the exhaust like? Also, is that gas lid painted or chromed? It was hard to tell from the pic. It looks like a very nice driver though. ~Juliet

Juliet,
You have really caught me on this one! The prospective buyer is my Brother, not me. There are many chrome parts on the engine as you can see. Most can be deleted and replaced without any major problems, outside of NCRS of course. Just GM replacements. And I do not mean that as a criticism. This car would make (and does make) a fine driver as you have noted. I have not checked numbers....

*Edit*-Yes the gas lid is chromed. I have never seen that before!

you guys are lowballing big time. an '82 here at a dealer in worse shape than mine sold for 14K.. that car, assuming electrical and drivetrain is as nice as the body, would probably go for 19-25K

As I scrolled through the pics - I first thought 13k - at least. About halfway
thought 14-15k. By the end of the pix I figured someone might buy that for
16-17k. 13 thousand USD sounds like a nice deal - totally original or not.

From your description, it sounds very clean and solid. To be sure, check the
frame in these suspicious spots: Look at the reinforcement steel that runs
vertically along the edge of the trailing arm slot - inspecting the condition of the weld - and at the bottom. Look for any repairs that were done to
the end of the rails behind the door bottom. Look at the triangular
gussets that are on the inside corners of the frame rails near the end caps
for rust at the corners.

If these all look clean and solid, you should be in great shape. That car looks
really sweet in the pictures, and a new rear suspension is a big headache
out of the way.

Good luck to your brother.

Paul, I think that your brother would be really pleased with the car for 13K US$. I agree with you that a lot of the chrome is cosmetic and easily replaced with stock type items, if your brother wants to do the NCRS thing. The one thing to really check is if it has the original engine and transmission. The other parts, carb, alternator, starter and other things critical to NCRS correctness can be found (if they aren't original) but could be pretty expensive to bring back to "correctness." If your brother wants a really good looking and running driver, then he should buy it and enjoy it!
I like it too much!
If your brother buys it, you have to get him to join the forum, especially if he is as great a guy as you are. You can always be depended on to help spread the wealth (knowledge.)

Interesting how he's got an NCRS front plate in conjunction with all the appearance mods. I just noticed the passenger side mirror, which is another non-original piece. Don't get me wrong, I have one and love it.

It looks like a great car at $13k if the frame is clean. Just don't expect it to appreciate like a 99+ point car.

I think the car looks great and would be a good buy if all of the big work is done. The rear suspesion alone is a pretty pricey purchase not to mention how much work it would be to do it. Trust me I know this one.

I say go for it. I wish mine looked/ will look this good.

If it has all its original parts (engine, trans,...) plus the majority of the factory bits and pieces, the frame and body are sound, that car is a steal at 13k$. The parts that have been chromed can easily be replaced with the original stuff. If it has a NOM and other drivetrain modifications, needs steering/suspension/brake work, other mechanical defects, then 13k$ is about right even with a clean body and solid frame.

Can't say I like the bluedot tail lights. That would have to be the first thing to go.
